Portion of Turfway Road (KY 717) to Reopen on Saturday, Nov. 9, After Three Week Closure for Intersection Upgrades

Part of ongoing Donaldson Highway (KY 236) widening project

COVINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 8, 2024) Turfway Road (KY 717) in Boone County will reopen on Saturday, Nov. 9, concluding a nearly three week closure needed for the Donaldson Highway (KY 236) widening project. The closure, in place since Oct. 21, was essential to expedite construction on a section of the Turfway Road and Donaldson Highway intersection.

Crews closed Turfway Road from O’Hara Road (mile point 1.29) to Donaldson Highway (mile point 1.68) to create a safer work zone for the contractor and streamline project progress. The temporary closure not only reduced time on this portion of the project but also allowed for a better engineered final project.

Scheduled to reopen around noon on Saturday, Nov. 9, two days ahead of schedule, this portion of Turfway Road saw extensive upgrades including: cement stabilization, installation of perforated pipe edge drains to enhance drainage, and the application of three layers of asphalt base topped by an asphalt surface layer.

As the Donaldson Highway widening project advances, crews are set to initiate a traffic switch on Donaldson Highway between Turfway Road and Houston Road (KY 842) in the coming weeks. KYTC will provide further details about this traffic switch at a later date.

Project Background: a widening and safety improvement project on Donaldson Highway between Houston Road (KY 842) and Mineola Pike (KY 3076) began March 2023. The project includes widening a two-mile stretch of road to five lanes with curb and gutter, including two through-lanes in each direction with a center turn lane. A sidewalk and shared-use path will also be added to improve connectivity for all road users.

“Currently Donaldson Highway experiences bouts of congestion from several businesses, schools, residentials and commercial development in the area.” said Bob Yeager, Chief District Engineer of KYTC’s District 6 Office. “This project will help mitigate congestion, provide better access for pedestrians and overall improve safety,” he said.

The $33.2 million project was awarded to Riegler Blacktop of Florence, KY. The project has a completion date of September 2025.

The date, time, and duration of work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.
