UPDATED TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Steel Repairs Continue on John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge in Jefferson County
Long-term closure of the left two lanes beginning Friday, Oct. 11, at 5 p.m.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 9, 2024) – Steel repairs are progressing on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge, which carries Interstate 65 South over the Ohio River in Louisville.
Repairs on the downstream side will be completed by Friday, Oct. 11, at 9 a.m., prompting the reopening of the right two lanes. Once traffic control measures are removed, crews will begin work on the upstream side, which will require the closure of the left three lanes until 5 p.m. The left two lanes will remain closed until 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 24.
This project, which began in July 2024, follows a federally required inspection of older bridges across the country built with “T-1” steel – a high-strength, quenched, and treated steel known for being highly amenable to welding and machining. Potential issues had been found in other states with certain types of welds, which needed to be tested. During 2022 inspections on the Kennedy bridge, engineering firm Michael Baker International tested 696 welds and identified 44 locations that would need future repairs but posed no immediate safety issues.
The project is being completed by Southern Road and Bridge, LLC, under a nearly $3 million contract, and is expected to be completed by May 2025.
The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.
