LEXINGTON, Ky. (August 14, 2024) – Motorists should note continuing traffic impacts and watch for workers involved in executing four state highway improvement projects in Lexington that will provide a $170 million Team Kentucky investment to build better connections for stronger communities by enhancing safety and easing traffic congestion at these locations:
Interstate 75 Widening: Newtown Pike to Paris Pike
- The project will expand the interstate from three lanes to four lanes each direction from Newtown Pike to Paris Pike. The work zone maintains three lanes in each direction, although lanes may be shifted and narrowed. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph. Barrels and barrier walls will be used to control traffic flow.
Interstate 75 Widening: Paris Pike to the Southern Split
- The project will expand the interstate from three lanes to four lanes each direction from the Paris Pike exit to the I-75/I-64 southern split. The work zone maintains three lanes in each direction, although lanes may be shifted and narrowed. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph. Barrels and barrier walls will be used to control traffic flow.
New Circle Road (KY 4) Widening
- The project will add one lane in each direction on New Circle Road from Leestown Road to the Norfolk Southern Railroad, widening it from four to six lanes. The Leestown Road interchange will be reconfigured as a safer, more efficient Double Crossover Diamond (DCD) interchange. Currently, traffic on Leestown Road has been reduced to one lane in each direction at New Circle Road.
Newtown Pike (KY 922) Widening
- The project will add one lane in each direction to Newtown Pike between New Circle Road and I-75, and make improvements to Legacy Trail. Traffic impacts will be announced as construction progresses.
The four projects are part of Driving Lexington Progress – an effort to improve safety, ease traffic congestion, and add capacity to state transportation infrastructure in the growing central Kentucky city through $170 million in Kentucky Transportation Cabinet construction projects along I-75/I-64, New Circle Road (KY 4), and Leestown Road and Newtown Pike (KY 922).
During construction, motorists should take it slow through work zones, eliminate distractions, obey speed limits, heed all warning signs, and drive safely to protect themselves and workers.
