Inspection to Resume on Southbound U.S. 41 Bridge in Henderson Next Week

Lane restrictions should be expected during this process

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (August 14, 2024) – A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to resume the biannual inspection of the U.S. 41 bridges over the Ohio River in Henderson next week.

Palmer Engineering will return on Monday, August 19 to begin inspection of the southbound bridge, working from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day through Saturday. Motorists should anticipate traffic being restricted to one lane during those hours.

Work is scheduled to be completed by Saturday, August 24.

Drivers are urged to watch for signage and other traffic control devices as they approach the bridge. Caution is necessary when workers and equipment are present close to the flow of traffic.

The Federal Highway Administration requires structural safety inspection every two years for any bridge that spans more than 20 feet. The Twin Bridges were last inspected in 2022. This is a different process than the FHWA required T-1 steel inspection that was conducted on the southbound bridge in the fall of 2023. That inspection was required on all bridges nationwide built during the 1960s and 1970s that contain T-1 Steel, and looked specifically at hundreds of welds across the structure rather than the entire bridge.

The northbound bridge opened to traffic in 1932, while its counterpart opened in 1965. Around 43,000 vehicles use the Twin Bridges to cross between Kentucky and Indiana every day.
