TRAFFIC ADVISORY: U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) and Mellwood Avenue Resurfacing and Rightsizing Project
New lane configurations included in project
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (July 25, 2024) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of a resurfacing and rightsizing project that began this week on U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) and Mellwood Avenue in Jefferson County.
Mellwood Avenue between Frankfort Avenue and U.S. 42 is currently three travel lanes with one-way eastbound traffic. The resurfacing and rightsizing project will reconfigure this block to two-way traffic, maintaining the current on-street parking along the northern curb line.
U.S. 42 between Mellwood Avenue and KY 1932 (Chenoweth Lane) is currently mostly four travel lanes. The project consists of converting the roadway to two travel lanes with the addition of a two-way left turn lane (TWLTL) to coincide with the existing configuration of U.S. 42 between Haldeman Avenue and Ewing Avenue.
Additional improvements include dedicated left-turn lanes at signalized intersections, marked shoulders, a striped median between Jarvis Lane and Mockingbird Valley Road, and a right turn lane at Mockingbird Valley Road. At U.S. 42 and Country Lane, the current five-lane section will see no changes eastbound, however the leftmost lane westbound will become a left turn only lane to Country Lane, with a single westbound lane continuing and a dedicated right turn lane to Country Lane.
Public outreach for the rightsizing portion of the project was conducted by Louisville Metro Government’s Office of Planning. More information regarding the rightsizing portion of the project can be found online, including striping plans.
Motorists should expect lane closures daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. as work progresses. The project is expected to be completed by the end of August. Temporary message signs displaying "New Traffic Pattern Ahead" will be installed to alert motorists of the changes, along with new permanent regulatory signs.
The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.
