U.S. 60 Bridge Reopened Ahead of Schedule

Bridge confirmed safe for travel, work completed in just 14 days

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (June 13, 2024) – The U.S. 60 bridge over Highland Creek at the Henderson-Union County line reopened at around noon today, ahead of schedule, after crews completed work to address deterioration of one of the structure's support piers. Kentucky Transportation Cabinet engineers have confirmed the safety of the bridge and have lifted weight restrictions.

Following an inspection in May, engineers determined on May 30 that reducing the bridge's weight limit to 10-tons was a necessary safety step until deterioration on the pier could be repaired. That reduction mainly restricted travel for commercial and industrial vehicles. Restoring the connection quickly and safely was a priority of the administration.

Original estimates were that repairs would take around one month. The project was completed in just 14 days.

Intech Contracting, a contractor for the KYTC, began work on the bridge on Monday, expecting to be on the bridge until at least Friday. Work, however, was completed earlier today and the bridge has been allowed to reopen a full day ahead of schedule.

The 10-ton weight limit has been lifted and normal traffic has been allowed to resume.

Around 6,000 vehicles pass through the U.S. 60 corridor between Henderson and Union counties each day.
