Inspection Determines that Restrictions on KY 2698 (Carter Road) Bridge over US 60 can be Lifted

Plans to repair damage from crash still in the works

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (June 10, 2024) Both US 60 and KY 2698 (Carter Road) in Owensboro have now fully reopened following lane restrictions that have been in place since the Carter Road overpass was struck by a commercial vehicle on Friday.

After cleanup was completed Friday afternoon, the decision was made to reopen just one westbound lane of US 60 and one northbound lane of Carter Road pending further analysis by Kentucky Transportation Cabinet bridge engineers. Eastbound US 60 and southbound Carter Road were not impacted.

Earlier today it was determined that the bridge was still safe to use until permanent repairs can be made, and normal traffic was allowed to resume on both roadways.

The only restriction that remains in effect is that the right shoulder of Carter Road over the bridge, the side where the impact took place, is closed.

Engineers are still working on plans to make repairs to the bridge, but next steps have yet to be determined.
