Newtown Pike/KY 922 Widening Project to Soon Begin in Fayette County

to Improve Safety and Mobility

Project area is between New Circle Road/KY 4 and Interstate 75

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 26, 2024)  A project to widen a portion of Newtown Pike will soon begin to improve safety and traffic flow along a high-traffic corridor in Lexington. Newtown Pike/KY 922 will be widened from two to three lanes in each direction between New Circle Road/KY 4 and Interstate 75.

Currently, approximately 44,000 vehicles per day use Newtown Pike, with 18% of the traffic volume attributed to truck traffic. Increased capacity is needed to handle current and future projected traffic volumes of 70,500 by 2030.

The majority of the current raised medians will remain in place along the route. New sidewalks and trail improvements will be added in select locations along Newtown Pike to provide accessible and safe connections for pedestrians.

In addition, the Legacy Trail will be rerouted underneath Newtown Pike/KY 922. The underpass will be approximately 350 feet south of the intersection with Citation Boulevard.

The $22.1 million contract was awarded to L-M Asphalt Partners LTD D/B/A and is expected to be complete in August 2025. The traveling public will be informed of significant changes to traffic patterns through advisories furnished to media outlets.

District 7 includes:  Anderson, Bourbon, Boyle, Clark, Fayette, Garrard, Jessamine, Madison, Mercer, Montgomery, Scott and Woodford Counties
