District 12 Snow an Ice Crews Remain on Duty Treating and Plowing Roads
Take it slow, use caution; arctic temps reduce salt's effectiveness
PIKEVILLE, Ky. (6:00 AM Jan. 15, 2024) – State Crews in District 12 remain on duty plowing and treating roads in Eastern Kentucky.
As of 6:00 a.m., roads are partly to fully covered with wet travel lanes in higher-trafficked areas. Air temperatures range from 19 to 23 degrees. Icy and slick conditions have been reported and will likely remain throughout the day as more snow is forecasted.
All crews in Floyd, Johnson, Knott, Pike, Martin, Lawrence and Letcher counties will continue treating roads with salt and plowing snow.
Motorists should note that salt is less effective in arctic cold. While crews add calcium chloride to help melt snow and ice, refreezing is still possible. Slick conditions are expected during the Monday morning commute, even on treated surfaces.
Avoid non-essential travel. If you do have to be on roads, please slow down, use caution, remember that if looks wet it could be icy, check National Weather Service forecasts, and be prepared:
❄️ - Plan ahead by checking goky.ky.gov or the WAZE app for traffic conditions
❄️ - Expect delays, and leave early to get to your destination safely
❄️ - Take it slow and leave plenty of braking distance between you and the car ahead
During winter storms, KYTC District 12 crews operate around the clock using a three-tier priority system to keep people and commerce moving in the most effective way.
