I-65 Exit 86 Interchange Traffic Switch Scheduled for this Weekend
Changes include new roadway alignments and traffic signals
ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (Dec. 15, 2023) – As the interchange project along I-65 at Exit 86 nears completion, construction crews are preparing to switch traffic to a new alignment at the new bridge over the interstate and KY 222 intersections with Blue Oval-SK and US 31W. The current plan moves traffic off the old bridge this weekend. The move is tentatively set for Saturday (December 16th), but adverse weather could delay the schedule.
When the switch is implemented, motorists exiting and entering I-65 on the south side of the intersection will utilize new ramps. Existing ramps remain in use on the north side of the interchange as crews demolish the old bridge and complete construction of new ramps to and from the new bridge. Southbound exiting motorists will have to follow a temporary extended path to the new section of KY 222 and turn right toward Glendale or left toward US 31W until construction of the new southbound exit ramp is complete. There is a new signal (traffic light) at the Blue Oval-SK main entrance and a new signal at the interstate bridge which will become active when the switch takes place.
The KY 222 intersection with US 31W is on a new alignment. There is also a new signal at this intersection.
Motorists are advised to approach the area with increased awareness as this change takes place and as traffic adapts to new movements along these routes, intersections and business entrances. Pay close attention to striping and signage in the area.
