Traffic Advisory: Overnight US 23 Detour Planned Tonight, Tuesday Night at Flatwoods
For AK Steel overpass demolition 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. in Greenup County
FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (Dec. 3, 2023) – Motorists are reminded that demolition of the old AK Steel overpass in Greenup County tonight and Tuesday night will require the temporary overnight closure of US 23 with all traffic detoured through Flatwoods.
Beginning at 7 p.m. tonight, Monday, Dec. 4, barricades will block all lanes of US 23 north of Diederich Boulevard (KY 693) and south of the Ironton-Russell Bridge. All traffic on US 23 will be detoured using KY 693 and KY 207 through Flatwoods until 7 a.m. Tuesday morning, Dec. 5.
Contractors for Cleveland Cliffs will reopen US 23 during the day Tuesday, then resume work Tuesday night. All US 23 traffic will again be detoured overnight Tuesday using KY 207 and KY 693 until 7 a.m. Wednesday morning, Dec. 6.
Because of US 23’s heavy traffic – as many as 26,000 vehicles pass through the Russell-Flatwoods area each day – lengthy backups and delays are expected. Motorists are urged to adjust their travel plans accordingly or seek alternate routes.
The work is being done by Cleveland Cliffs under an approved Kentucky Transportation Cabinet permit. The road closure and detours are necessary for public safety as contractors work over the highway to tear down the old overpass.
