District 9 Road Report: Work Zone Traffic Updates for August 21-27

Temporary lane, road closures scheduled in NE Kentucky counties

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (Aug. 21, 2023) –The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet reminds motorists to watch for lane closures, delays, and traffic changes in state highway work zones in the coming weeks.

Traffic impacts from paving projects and major road construction can be expected at the following locations now through Aug. 27 and thereafter:

BATH COUNTY

  • KY 1602 (Oakley-Pebble Road): Paving, repairs along two miles of the highway between Crain Road and KY 111 (milepoint 5.2-7). One-lane, flagged traffic, delays.
  • KY 1331 (Howards Mill Road): Paving, repairs along three miles of the highway between KY 965 and the Montgomery-Bath county line (milepoint 0-3.3). One-lane, flagged traffic, delays.

BOYD COUNTY

  • US 60 (Coalton to Cannonsburg): Road reconstruction continues along 4 miles of US 60 between I-64 at Coalton and the Cannonsburg KY 180 intersection. Lane shifts, daily flagged traffic, narrow travel lanes, speed limit changes, blasting. Expect delays. Detours: Princeland Drive is closed, and detoured to Princess Drive. All KY 5 traffic is detoured to Princess Drive intersection. *NOTE: Signal work at the US 60 and KY 180 intersection this week could require intermittent lane closures. Use caution.
  • US 60 (13th Street) and US 23: Intermittent work to install striping, signals, etc., in downtown Ashland and north to the Greenup County line. Nighttime traffic restrictions possible, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • US 23 South of Ashland: Northbound lanes of US 23 from 39th to 43rd streets (MP 15.6 to 16.1) closed for water line repairs. Highway reduced to one lane, each direction, using southbound lanes through October. Use caution, expect delays.

CARTER COUNTY

  • Interstate 64 (MM 154-161): Resurfacing and repairs near Smith Run overpass to the Tygarts Creek bridge, mile markers 154 to 161. One-lane traffic each direction. Right lane closed, merge left approaching work zone. Watch for traffic shifts inside work zones. Speed limits reduced to 55 mph. Yield at entrance ramps.
  • KY 2 (Olive Hill to Smokey Valley): Expect lane closures, flagged traffic between US 60 and KY 1704 (mile markers 0 to 4) for embankment work, repairs and paving.

GREENUP COUNTY

  • AA Highway (KY 10): Microsurface paving from KY 7 to the Greenup Locks and Dam, mile markers 8 to 12. Expect one-lane or flagged traffic. Traffic crossing at intersections may be restricted until pavement cures. Watch message boards.
  • Coming Soon to US 23: Contractors will remove the old AK Steel overpass just north of Diederich Boulevard at Russell. Work dates, traffic changes, and detours will be announced.

LEWIS COUNTY

  • KY 36 between Carlisle and KY 11 near Sharpsburg: Crews are installing thermoplastic striping along edge and center lines. Watch for slow-moving equipment, flagged traffic, no passing.
  • AA Highway (KY 9): Paving between Ribolt and Manley Hollow Road (milepoints 25.5 to 21). Travel on rough surfaces at times. Watch for lane closures and flagged traffic.
  • KY 8 at Garrison: Closed 8 to 3 on Tuesday, Aug. 22, at Collins Addition (milepoint 22.4) for culvert pipe replacement. Road blocked between Collins Addition and the Garrison bridge. Detour via KY 1306 (Kinney), AA Highway (KY 10), and Dudley Avenue.

ROWAN COUNTY

  • Interstate 64 (MM 129-135): Paving and repairs from the Bath County line to the Bullfork Road overpass, mile markers 129 to 135. One-lane traffic each direction. Right lane closed, merge left approaching work zone. Watch for traffic shifts inside work zones. Speed limits reduced to 55 mph. Yield at entrance ramps.
  • Interstate 64 (MM 141-148): Paving and repairs from the Rowan County rest areas to the Carter County line. Contractors will set up traffic control – right lane closed, merge left, each direction – beginning Aug. 28, with milling and paving expected to start after Labor Day. Use caution.
  • KY 377 (Triplett): Highway safety improvement project from KY 799 to the Rowan-Lewis county line. Slide repairs, culvert extensions, drainage and shoulder work, tree removal. Culvert work and tree trimming this week will require intermittent one-lane, flagged traffic. Use caution.
  • KY 377 (Cranston Road): Utility relocations between KY 32 and Triplett. Watch for lane closures, flagged traffic; take it slow.

Motorists should also watch for lane closures and flagged traffic where crews are conducting daily maintenance activities such as paint striping, pothole patching, ditching, mowing, and other repairs in District 9’s service area of Bath, Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Fleming, Greenup, Lewis, Mason, Nicholas and Rowan counties.

Road work schedules are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Motorists are asked to heed all warning signs, slow down in work zones and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.

WORK ZONE TIPS

  • Slow down, buckle up, and expect the unexpected.
  • Stay alert, and avoid distractions.
  • Don’t tailgate. Keep a safe braking distance between you and the vehicle ahead, and between construction workers and equipment.
  • Obey road crew flaggers, and pay attention to message boards and warning signs.
