US 42 Carrollton-Prestonville Bridge Closure in Carroll County for Maintenance Repairs on Friday, July 28
Project expected to close bridge for one working day
COVINGTON, Ky. (July 27, 2023) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 6 Office announces a one-day closure of the Carrollton-Prestonville Bridge on US 42 in Carroll County on Friday, July 28, for necessary maintenance repairs.
The work will require the continuous truss bridge to be closed on US 42 from the 5.7 to 5.9 mile points, a distance of 0.2 miles. Maintenance crews will be jacking the bridge up, and resetting the bearings located underneath the bridge deck.
In mid-June, during the last Non-Redundant Steel Tension Member (NSTM) inspection, inspectors found the bearings had shifted due to thermal movement. In response, KYTC lowered the load rating on the bridge from 22 tons to 10 tons. This lowered weight rating was put in place to reduce the vibration on the bridge until a maintenance repair could be made.
“Safety is our number one priority,” said Bob Yeager, Chief District Engineer for KYTC District 6. “Once these repairs are made, we’ll return the bridge load rating back to its prior 22-ton limit, which is a Class A trucking highway at 44,000lbs. Trucks weighing more than 44,000lbs must use alternative routes.”
The maintenance project will require a full closure of the bridge from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Motorists are advised to find an alternate route. First responder agencies will have access to the bridge, in the case of an emergency.
The Carrollton-Prestonville Bridge is scheduled to be replaced in the coming years. Right-of-way activity should take place in 2024. Construction is expected to begin after right-of-way is cleared in 2025.
