Final flood-damaged state highway in Perry County reopens to traffic
Drainage structure rebuilt on KY 451 near Busy
JACKSON, Ky. – One year after record flooding devastated eastern Kentucky, the final state highway damaged from high water has reopened.
A major drainage structure on KY 451 at milepoint 10.2 near Busy, which was washed out during the flooding in the overnight hours of July 27-28, 2022, has been rebuilt and is open to traffic.
The drainage structure is the last of five long-term closures that required significant repairs for the flood-damaged state highways to reopen. The other closures included another washed-out drainage structure on KY 451 near Krypton, a major slide on KY 267, a break in pavement on KY 1087, a washed-out bridge on KY 1146 at Hardburly, and a damaged bridge on KY 3351 at Ary. All have been repaired and are open to traffic.
To date, the Transportation Cabinet has overseen construction of 26 bridges or concrete drainage structures on county routes. In addition, permanent repairs have been made to 122 major breaks in pavement in Breathitt, Lee, Owsley, Perry, and Wolfe counties, with only 21 breaks left to be repaired. A total of 262,690 linear feet of steel -- nearly 5 miles -- has been used so far to fix the breaks. Of the 21 sites yet to be fixed, most either will require moving of overhead utility lines, or will be repaired by using soil nails and grouting. A significant amount of asphalt patching and surfacing has also been completed.
