Sinkhole Repair Completed - Interstate 24 Returned to Normal Flow at 41mm in Lyon County
Work zone removed in time for Memorial Day holiday travel
PADUCAH, Ky. (May 25, 2023) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has removed a work zone lane restriction along Interstate 24 eastbound at the 41 mile marker in Lyon County where a sinkhole developed along the right-of-way on Saturday.
The sinkhole, just off the edge of the paved shoulder, was excavated on Monday. Engineers attributed the sinkhole to a natural spring that eroded the soil over time to create a void beneath the shoulder. The hole was filled with concrete and a rocked drain was created to allow water from the spring to seep into a nearby ditch line.
The work zone lane restriction is along I-24 eastbound just east of the U.S. 62 Eddyville-Kuttawa Exit 40 Interchange has been removed. Traffic has returned to normal flow at the site in time for the Memorial Day holiday weekend travel period.
