Sinkhole Repair Completed - Interstate 24 Returned to Normal Flow at 41mm in Lyon County

Work zone removed in time for Memorial Day holiday travel

PADUCAH, Ky. (May 25, 2023)  The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has removed a work zone lane restriction along Interstate 24 eastbound at the 41 mile marker in Lyon County where a sinkhole developed along the right-of-way on Saturday.

The sinkhole, just off the edge of the paved shoulder, was excavated on Monday.  Engineers attributed the sinkhole to a natural spring that eroded the soil over time to create a void beneath the shoulder.  The hole was filled with concrete and a rocked drain was created to allow water from the spring to seep into a nearby ditch line.

The work zone lane restriction is along I-24 eastbound just east of the U.S. 62 Eddyville-Kuttawa Exit 40 Interchange has been removed.  Traffic has returned to normal flow at the site in time for the Memorial Day holiday weekend travel period.
