‘Singing Bridge’ Inspection Set for Next Week
in Franklin County
Span will remain open to vehicular and pedestrian traffic
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Feb. 17, 2023) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of an upcoming inspection of the “Singing Bridge,” a span that carries U.S. 60X over the Kentucky River in downtown Frankfort.
All inspection-related work will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 20, through Friday, Feb. 24 on the bridge. Since there will be no lane or sidewalk closures, traffic is not expected to be impacted. Citizens should expect to see rigging attached to the bridge, workers on the sidewalks and a safety boat on the river.
A consultant is inspecting the bridge at the behest of the city of Frankfort as part of a municipal study on the future of the historic structure. Additional questions should be directed to the city. This is different from the required, annual inspection conducted by KYTC that has found the bridge safe for the motoring public to cross.
King Bridge Co. of Cleveland constructed the steel thru truss structure in 1894. It gets its name from the humming noise created by vehicles traveling across its steel grate deck.
The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.
