KYTC District 9 Update 5 PM: Highway Conditions Improve in NE Kentucky

Main A and B routes mostly to partly clear; C routes passable

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (5 PM, Saturday, Dec. 24, 2022) – State highway conditions improved today as snow plow and salt truck crews worked roads across northeast Kentucky following this week's arctic storm.

As of 5 p.m., main Priority A routes are mostly clear and lesser-traveled Priority B routes are mostly to partly clear with scattered icy spots, while Priority C back roads are snowy with some pavement showing but are passable. Air temperatures range from 12 to 13 degrees, with pavement at 25 degrees.

Arctic cold will continue to reduce salt effectiveness tonight with single-digit low temps expected. Slick conditions and black ice remain possible, even on pavement clear of snow.

Now through Christmas day, if travel is necessary, motorists should continue to use slow speeds in case a cold spot or drift creates a hazard.

Please use caution, watch for icy pavement, check National Weather Service forecasts, and be prepared:

❄️ - Pack an emergency car kit with enough supplies for everyone in the vehicle

❄️ - Make sure your car is winterized

❄️ - Check goky.ky.gov or the free WAZE app for traffic and road conditions

❄️ - Expect delays - leave early to get to your destination

❄️ - Keep a full tank of gas

❄️ - Take it slow and leave lots of room between you and the car ahead
