On November 21, the Kentucky Arts Council proudly hosted the Governor’s Awards in the Arts in the Capitol Rotunda. This exceptional event celebrated the contributions of Kentucky’s artists and arts organizations, honoring their profound impact on our communities and our state. Through their creativity, our honorees remind us of the power of human connection, inspiring us to create a more inclusive, resilient, and compassionate world for everyone.

For the 2024 Governor’s Awards in the Arts, commissioned artworks were created by Yoko Nogami, a dynamic interdisciplinary artist born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. Nogami’s work is deeply rooted in themes of cultural displacement, gender, parenthood, and identity. A recurring character in her pieces, Toko, is a blend of Nogami herself and her daughter, Tora, navigating the complexities of the world around them. In these commissioned works, Toko merges nature, music, and visual media, reflecting Nogami’s commitment to both her personal heritage and her love for the cultural richness of Kentucky.

AWARD

As we celebrate the achievements of our artists, I want to take a moment to encourage all Kentuckians to support local talent. When you buy from Kentucky artists, you’re not just purchasing a unique, meaningful gift—you’re investing in the heart of our community. Every piece created by a local artist, every craft and creation, helps sustain our small businesses, supports local economies, and strengthens the social fabric of our neighborhoods. We’re highlighting Kentucky Crafted artists on our social media channels, so please follow us on Facebook and Instagram to discover more and connect with these incredible creators.

But supporting local artists doesn’t stop with art on the walls or in our homes. I also encourage you to give the gift of experience. Experiences—whether it's tickets to a live play, a concert, or a dance performance—are powerful ways to show someone that they are loved and valued. When we share in an experience together, we create memories that last far beyond any physical gift. These moments help us feel deeply connected, providing a sense of belonging and reminding us of our shared humanity. And when you support local venues and organizations, including our Kentucky Arts Partners, you’re contributing to the cultural vitality of our state. Their live events, classes, and performances bring people together, fostering relationships and nurturing the creative spirit that makes our communities thrive.

Art has always been at the core of community building. Whether it’s a painting, a performance, or an artisan craft, the arts reflect who we are, what we care about, and the values we hold dear. They provide a space to challenge our perspectives, connect with others, and express our most deeply held emotions. The act of buying from local artists or gifting a live event experience isn’t just about acquiring something—it’s about fostering belonging. It’s a tangible way to show someone they matter and that their experiences and relationships are valued.

This holiday season let’s come together to uplift our artists and the venues that make our communities vibrant. Whether through purchasing a locally made piece of art or sharing the gift of an unforgettable experience, we have the power to make a lasting impact. Thank you for your continued support, and for being an essential part of Kentucky’s thriving arts community.
