We know you’re counting down the weeks until The Kentucky Crafted Market, March 11-12 at the Kentucky Horse Park’s Alltech Arena. We are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the best showcase for work by the finest visual and craft artists. The event is free, but parking at the Horse Park is $6. See you there!

If you own or are a wholesale buyer for a business, you can still register for the Trade Only Day at the Market. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 10. There are 17 Kentucky Crafted artists making their first ever Market appearance, and you won’t want to miss the opportunity to see what new artwork you can offer your customers.

Kentucky’s Poetry Out Loud state championship will return to an in-person format 10 a.m. March 1 at the Grand Theatre in Frankfort. School champions will vie for the title of Poetry Out Loud state champion, and the opportunity to represent Kentucky at the Poetry Out Loud national finals, May 8-10 in Washington, D.C. We hope to see you in Frankfort March 1 to cheer on your school champion.

We want to thank our partners at Kentucky Performing Arts for hosting “Our Kentucky Home: Hispanic/Latin American Visual Art in the Commonwealth.” The traveling exhibit ended its tour of Kentucky in Louisville at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. Attendance at the closing reception earlier this month was phenomenal, a spectacular sendoff for an exhibit that showcased some of the best visual art by Hispanic, Latin American and Latinx artists in Kentucky.

Just as that exhibit wraps up its trip across the state, we are excited to launch another exhibit on a tour of Kentucky. “Continent to Commonwealth: Asian/Asian American Kentucky Art.” We, along with our exhibit partners Asia Institute-Crane House and the Kentucky Chinese American Association, are encouraging Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) artists living in Kentucky to submit visual art for consideration in this new traveling exhibit. In sending this exhibit on a tour of the commonwealth, our goal is to share AAPI experiences in Kentucky today. Artwork will be chosen by a panel of Asian and Asian American Kentuckians and other cultural specialists. The exhibit will travel to arts centers, galleries, museums, libraries and other public venues across the state for 12 months beginning in May. For more information about submitting artwork for this exhibit, see the guidelines. The deadline to apply is Feb. 28.

The Kentucky Rural-Urban Exchange (RUX), an organization the arts council has been privileged to partner with in the past, is currently accepting applications for its 2023-2024 cohort. RUX initiates proactive conversations about Kentucky’s most complex challenges, doing so by building relationships across difference, and uplifting a Kentucky story that is as exciting, diverse and complex as Kentuckians. The 50-member RUX cohort will travel across Jefferson, Daviess and Estill Counties to build connections across cultural, racial, economic and geographic divides. The deadline to apply is March 10. Learn more about RUX and how to apply at the RUX website.

Our regional partners at South Arts have several grant and program opportunities for artists in the American South. Take a look at some of the opportunities and contact the staff at South Arts for more information. We want to see Kentucky well-represented among South Arts’ programs.

Ashanti Grace Castleberry

We are excited to have another intern with us for the spring semester. Ashanti Grace Castleberry is from Gary, Ind., and attends Kentucky State University. At Kentucky State, she is in her junior year, majoring in mass communication and journalism with a minor in English. On campus, she is the editor of the university’s newspaper, Thorobred News, and is a member of Circle K International. Outside of her studies, Ashanti enjoys watching horror movies, listening to music, going on nature walks and playing different types of Nintendo games. She’s also interested in learning about all forms of art! Welcome to the Kentucky Arts Council, Ashanti!
