"Leave No Veteran Behind" during Thunder

Rx Veterans

During the 2015 Thunder Over Louisville celebration on April 18, the Coalition for the Homeless is asking the community to help join in the efforts to end veteran homelessness in our city. Recently, Mayor Greg Fischer and the Coalition for the Homeless unveiled an ambitious plan called Rx: Housing Veterans that aims to eliminate veteran homelessness in Louisville by 2016, but the success of this goal will take our whole community's participation. It's time to help serve those who so selflessly served us, because no one who wore our country's uniform should live or die on the streets of Louisville.

Rx: Housing Veterans has identified 360 homeless veterans in our community, and to date, has provided housing for over 100 of those. In order to get the remaining 260 homeless veterans off the streets by the end of the year, Rx: Housing Veterans needs to raise $50,000. All donations made through the Coalition's website on April 18th will help ensure that no veteran who served our country is left behind.

"Thunder is such a great patriotic event, from the air show to the fireworks, and it reminds us of the men and women who serve our country here and abroad, past and present" said Lisa Cates, Chair of the Coalition for the Homeless's Board of Directors. "We have a responsibility to do all we can to provide our homeless veterans with a safe and stable home, just as they served and sacrificed to keep our country safe."

On Thunder Day, volunteers with the Coalition for the Homeless and other local service providers will staff a booth near the Armed Services area to bring awareness to the Rx Housing Veterans program.

Visit www.louhomeless.org to donate or get more information about Rx: Housing Veterans and the Coalition for the Homeless.

Sustainability Story: Backyard Chickens

chickens 1

"I am very keen on connecting people to school gardens and encouraging them to keep their own chickens and the occasional pig.”  So said Prince Charles while in Louisville last month.  It was part of his talk about "the reconnection process," through which people can become intimately acquainted again with the food system and nature.

The Prince would like the backyard in Clifton where Elwood Stroder keeps four chickens. Elwood has been at it for about one year.  His four chickens have produced 137 beautiful eggs per month in the summer and fall and 85 per month in the winter.  Just last week, he reported his first four-chicken day in the Spring.

Elwood and his husband Mike O’Leary purchased both the chicken coop and the chickens at Fresh Start, located at 1007 East Jefferson Street in Louisville, because they wanted fresh eggs.  Fresh Start’s website  (http://freshstartgrowers.com/ ) has a whole section on backyard chickens.

Louisville Metro Ordinance allows up to six chickens (“five or less non-crowing poultry, and no more than one crowing poultry”) on small lots.

We’d like to feature your sustainability story - a resident or business doing good things for the environment.  Riding the bus, bicycling, walking, gardening and more - our eNews will feature practices which can benefit all of us.  Send you story to Bill Hollander or Kyle Ethridge.

Reminder: New Yard Waste Container Rule

Information provided by Metro Public Works

The return of spring brings with it the return of gardening and other yard work. It also means finding ways to dispose of yard waste that comply with the Yard Waste Container Regulation passed last year by the Louisville/Jefferson County Solid Waste Management District.

The good news is that most people are aware of the regulation and are complying with its requirements. Most of the approximately 80,000 households from which yard waste is collected are using containers prescribed by the regulation.  And most of those who say they were not previously aware of the regulation, when informed of the requirements, indicate they will switch to approved containers.

The regulation prohibits collection services from collecting yard waste that is in traditional plastic bags. It requires instead that yard waste be set out by households in one of the following manners:

  • In reusable containers up to 40 gallon capacity with handles and a lid
  • In paper bags designed for yard waste
  • In compostable plastic bags that meet ASTM D6400 standards
  • Bundled and tied without a container

When collection services encounter yard waste in traditional plastic bags they will not collect it. Anyone wishing to report yard waste set out in plastic bags may notify MetroCall at 311 or 574-5000. Enforcement officers will provide further education to the noncompliant households, but will eventually issue citations. Click here for flyer of FAQs.

There are many benefits of leaving grass clippings and mulched leaves in yards. A video on the “Love ‘Em and Leave ‘Em” campaign is available at http://cvp.telvue.com/player?id=T01343&video=219204
