District 6 Winter Warming Centers

As the winter cold begins to set in, Louisville officials are urging all to be safe during this winter season and also to check on the friends and neighbors, especially those who may be elderly. Temperatures drop from day to day, and the city wants everyone to stay as warm as possible. Louisville residents are able to take full advantage of city facilities and other resources to help manage the cold.

The Coalition for the Homeless coordinates the Operation White Flag program to ensure that homeless people can find shelter during severe weather. Operation White Flag goes into effect when temperatures drop to 35 degrees or lower (with or without wind chill). A white flag flies outside each participating shelter to show that Operation White Flag is in effect. All persons needing shelter can stay at the participating shelters while weather conditions persist. The participating Operation White Flag shelters include: St. Vincent de Paul (1034 S. Jackson St.), Salvation Army (831 S. Brook St.), The Healing Place (1020 W. Market St. (Men) and 1503 S. 15th St. (Women) and Wayside Christian Mission (432 E. Jefferson St.).

In addition, three day shelters can be used during Operation White Flag: Louisville Rescue Mission (733 E. Jefferson St.), St. John Center (700 E. Muhammad Ali (Men) and Wayside Christian Mission (432 E. Jefferson St.).

The Louisville Metro Public Health and Wellness Department offers the following cold weather related tips:

Stay indoors as much as possible and limit your exposure to the cold.

Cover up exposed areas such as your fingers, cheeks, ears, and nose.

Check on elderly friends and neighbors.

Stay hydrated.

Avoid alcoholic beverages and drinks with caffeine, such as coffee and soda.

Never run a generator inside a home or near a door or open window where carbon monoxide can get in.

Bring your pets indoors or ensure they have a warm shelter area with unfrozen water.

If you feel you need emergency medical attention due to temperatures, call 911 immediately.

The Louisville Fire Department cautions using alternative heat sources.  Whether it’s a space heater, a kerosene heater, an electrical fireplace or an electrical blanket, firefighters say make sure to read and follow safety instructions.

The Louisville Metro Community Services’ LIHEAP Crisis Program provides utility assistance to low-income residents with disconnection notices from their utility service provider or those who are facing eviction if their utilities are included in the rent. This program operates from January 12 through March 31, 2015 or until funds are exhausted.  Call 502-574-1157 for information on how to apply.

For additional information call Metro United Way at 211 or Metro Call at 311.

Below are a few warming centers in the District 6 area that we hope you will seek out if you or anyone you know may need to.

Congratulations To Mr. Ed White

ml;

Congratulations to Mr. Ed White, the founder of the River City Drum Corps, as the 2015 recipient of Louisville Metro’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Award.

Mayor Greg Fischer will present the award at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18 during the “Keepers of the Dream” community arts celebration dedicated to Dr. King at the Kentucky Center’s Whitney Hall located at 501 W. Main St. The event is free and open to the public.

The Freedom Award, was first presented in 1987, to recognize citizens that have dedicated their lives to promoting justice, peace, freedom, non-violence, racial equality and civic activism. This year’s award is a blown glass design created by Ché Rhodes, associate professor, Head of Glass, University of Louisville Hite Art Institute.

In 1990, Mr. Ed White, with encouragement from his late wife Zambia Nkrumah, founded the River City Drum Corps, a cultural arts initiative that brings together traditional African drumming, drum making, drum line performance and leadership for at-risk youth. The corps is now active at three JCPS schools, Farnsley Middle, Maupin Elementary and Wheatley Elementary, at Nativity Academy at St.Boniface school and Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, its community home since 1995.

Youth from two to 18 years of age perform in the corps and over the years hundreds have gone through the program which has helped motivate and steer them in the right direction. Many have gone on to earn music scholarships for college.

The River City Drum Corps has served as a national model and drumming programs have been launched in Paducah, Atlanta, Lake Charles, Louisiana and in Florida.

While the drum corps was getting started, Ed White became a traveling cultural ambassador, bringing awareness of African and African-American music, art and culture to students in Eastern Kentucky.

An innovator in academic enrichment programs, Ed White worked with others to change JCPS policy to allow basketball programs at elementary schools. He has helped launch many other out-of-school time programs and activities with JCPS and at the city’s community centers.

White has earned numerous awards including a 2014 National Education Association Human & Civil Rights Award, a United States Artists Fellowship and a Folk Heritage Award from the Kentucky Arts Council. And Louisville is proud to award Ed White with this prestigious honor.

A pre-performance in the Kentucky Center lobby from 4-4:45 p.m. will feature the Louisville Leopard Percussionists. Following the main program, there will be a post-show celebration in the lobby featuring the River City Drum Corps, with refreshments provided by Sullivan University.
