District 25's own Waverly Hills is spreading some holiday cheer on its historic famous facade. The spooky structure is being illuminated by an electric light show at night until January 4th.
WHERE: Waverly Hills Sanatorium, 4400 Paralee Lane, Louisville, KY 40272
WHEN: Now! until January 4th, Monday-Friday from 7pm-9pm, Saturday and Sunday 6pm-9pm. There will be a show every half an hour.

On Friday, December 12 a sport utility vehicle crashed into the traffic signal on Dixie Highway at the intersection of the Park Place Mall/Target shopping center.
As seen in the first picture, the collision not only knocked down the signal pole, but also destroyed the control cabinet and the pole foundation.
This is an intersection that serves 40,000 vehicles a day. So the lack of a working signal posed a major traffic headache.
The Electrical Maintenance Team immediately sprang into action and installed a temporary signal that created a three-way flashing red stop. Then they turned their attention to a full rebuild of the permanent traffic signal.
That required digging and pouring a new pole foundation along with installation of a control pad/cabinet, new span wires and signal displays.
It normally takes four to five weeks to build a traffic signal. But with all the unit’s resources and attention poured into the job, Electrical Maintenance had the new permanent signal built and ready for operation by late last Thursday afternoon.
The Southwest Government Center will again host a drop-off site that will also instantly recycle trees in to mulch that will be offered back to citizens for home use. Those wishing to receive mulch must bring an appropriate container in which to carry it. This mulch performs particularly well for acid-loving plants such as azaleas and rhododendrons.
WHERE: Southwest Government Center, 7219 Dixie Highway (Bring containers to take home fresh mulch.)
WHEN: December 26th, 27th, 30th and 31st, January 2nd & 3rd from 9am-4pm
Residents normally serviced by private waste haulers should check with those companies to see whether and when tree pickup is available.
Christmas tree vendors may recycle their unsold trees on Friday, December 26 ONLY, and only at the Hubbard’s Lane site.

Free family-friendly program offers behind-the-scenes look at archaeology process and findings, with hands-on experience
Riverside, the Farnsley-Moremen Landing will offer the opportunity to learn about the archaeology projects that have taken place at the historic property in southwest Louisville through a free new program that begins in January.
While visitors have long been able to join in archaeology digs at the site, “The Other Side of Archaeology” offers the chance to get an up-close look at the artifacts that have been found at Riverside, participate in the process of how archaeologists learn about the past from them, and see what has been learned.
The Other Side of Archaeology from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the following dates:
- January 2, 3, 8, 9, 16, 17, 23, 24, 30, 31
- February 5, 6, 13, 14, 20, 21, 27, 28
- March 5, 6.
with archaeology tours taking place at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on each day (weather permitting).
Participants will be able to wash, identify, and study artifacts, and take a behind-the-scenes tour. Led by a Kentucky Archaeological Survey archaeologist, the tours will take visitors to the locations of past and active archeological sites at Riverside, providing a perspective of life at the Farnsley-Moremen House and how archaeology has contributed to the identification and reconstruction of outbuildings on the property, like the detached kitchen, slave (later tenant) houses, smoke house, wash house, ice house and barn.
For more information, call 502/935-6809 or email info@riverside-landing.org.
