The Labor and Economic Development Committee will hold a special meeting next Monday, November 10th at 6:00pm for the public to weigh in on a proposed increase to the minimum wage. There will be 10 slots available in opposition of the ordinance and 10 slots available in favor of the ordinance. Each person will be allowed to speak for 3 minutes.  Did you know that Jefferson Memorial Forest provides nearly 7,500 school children with outdoor learning and recreational experiences each year? It’s true, and unfortunately the Forest’s shelter facilities for these children has fallen into a state of disrepair. Please support the Forest’s new friends group, Wilderness Louisville, Inc. in their effort to raise funds replace this dilapidated shelter in the Forest’s environmental education area. Neighborhood Place locations in Louisville will offer free events and workshops to help with your health, home and family in November including a free stop smoking series, multiple energy management workshops, a supermarket tour to learn cost-saving tips as well as opportunities to meet with the Legal Aid Society. Multiple Opportunities to Meet with a WeCare Representative with LG&E
A representative from WeCare at LG&E will be on hand at all Neighborhood Place locations this month to talk with interested persons about energy efficiency and energy usage and provide valuable information on ways to save money on their utility bills. WeCare staff will also determine if households are eligible for a variety of free services including air duct sealing and insulation, attic and wall insulation, programmable thermostats and much more. Bank On Louisville’s Start Fresh! is a free workshop for people with negative (non-fraud) banking histories, are in ChexSystems or are banking for the first time. Tuesdays, beginning Nov. 18 , Stop Smoking Classes at South Central Neighborhood Place, 12:30 - 1:30 p.m.

Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness is offering this free program to help smokers break the tobacco habit. Using the "Cooper/Clayton Method to Stop Smoking", the 13-week program includes weekly support group meetings combined with the use of nicotine replacement products such as patches and gum. Classes and all class materials are free and participants also receive free weekly supplies of nicotine replacement products.

Located at 3410 Lees Lane. Cane Run Nieghborhood Place clients only. Registration is required at 485-6826. Cane Run Neighborhood Place and Farnsley Middle School are distributing food baskets to clients in need for the Thanksgiving holiday.
The annual program that helps low income residents of Louisville with their utility bills has begun. LIHEAP, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, is a federally funded program operated by Community Action Partnership, part of Louisville Metro Community Services. The Subsidy Phase of LIHEAP will run this year from Nov. 3 through Dec. 11.
Residents wishing to apply must have an appointment. Scheduling for appointments will begin, in person only, Oct. 30 between 7 a.m. - 4 p.m., and Oct. 31 between 7 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Central CAP Office only located at the Urban Government Center, 810 Barret Ave., Room 127.
Starting Nov. 3, appointments will be held at the Southwest Government Center (7219 Dixie Highway, 502-574-1272) weekdays between 8 a.m. - 1 p.m., based on appointment availability. Upon registering for an appointment, residents will receive an appointment slip verifying the appointment date, time and location. LIHEAP applications will be completed at the time of the appointment and the assistance received is a one-time benefit, paid to the heating vendor.
Applicants must be Jefferson County residents with a household income at or below 130% of the federal poverty guidelines and willing to provide the following documentation at the time of their appointment:
- Picture ID for head of household (if available)
- Proof of all household income for the preceding month (food stamp award letter, Social Security award letter, pay stubs, etc.). All individuals 18 or over in the household with no income – and who do not receive food stamps -- must have a Proof of No Income form completed prior to applying for benefits. (Available at the CAP office at 810 Barret or by clicking here.)
- Social Security card(s) or official documentation with social security numbers or Permanent Resident Card Numbers for everyone living in the household.
- Most recent heating bill or verification from landlord that heating expenses are included in the rent (i.e. lease agreements).
Individuals who are unable to apply for this program in person may send a representative on their behalf with a note including the applicant’s signature and phone number. Call 574-1157 for more details on how this process works. Residents who are homebound -- which means a medical professional can verify they are confined to the home -- and who are unable to send a representative, may call 574-1274.
LG&E reminds customers that it is their responsibility to make arrangements to ensure continued service. Please contact LG&E’s customer service office at 589-1444 if you cannot make a payment in full and need to set up payment arrangements.
