District 13 Rising

An old saying reminds us that a rising tide raises all boats. We create a rising tide when we work together to make our community a safe, welcoming and positive place to live and work. I want to share two inspiring examples with you of caring people coming together to work for the good of our community.

First Baptist Church Fairdale – Caring in Action

Volunteers from FBCF will join us this Saturday, Oct. 25th, along with volunteers from Passport Health Plan, for Brightside’s Fall Community Clean-up. We’ll gather at the Playtorium at 8:30 a.m. for snacks and supplies, and fan out from there across our area to pick up trash and junk. Lead pastor, Josh Greene, points to this as just one way FBCF is committed to putting caring in action. We could use more volunteers, so come on out Saturday. Be sure to check out the excellent article Pastor Greene has written about Fairdale “on the rise.”

Wilderness Louisville –  A Nature To Help

The Mayor’s Oct. 18th Fall Hike at Jefferson Memorial Forest was a great morning of family fun. Shack in the Back, Fairdale DQ,  Fairdale Pic Pac and Heine Brothers provided a brunch to benefit Willderness Louisville.

This new volunteer group is raising funds to support Jefferson Memorial Forest/Metro Parks’ Natural Areas. One of their first projects is raising $10,000 for new program shelters at the Forest. You can go online to learn more about this volunteer-driven initiative and make a donation to this 501(c)3 nonprofit operating under the direction of a board of directors chaired by former Mayor and County Judge Executive David Armstrong.

Leaf Drop-Off Sites Open Nov. 11th

Three leaf disposal locations available

Louisville Metro residents not mulching autumn leaves into their lawns or using curbside collection will have the option to dispose of them at drop-off sites Tuesday through Saturday each week November 11 through December 6. The service will not be available on Thanksgiving Day and the day after Thanksgiving.

Leaf drop-off is a joint service of Metro Public Works and Metro Parks. Only loose leaves will be accepted. Containers used for transport must be disposed of off-site by residents. The leaves will be used as compost material.

The Solid Waste Management Division of Metro Public Works recommends using the following disposal methods before using the drop-off service:

Best: For a healthier lawn, mulch leaves with a lawnmower and let them settle into the turf system along with grass clippings and trimmings as a natural fertilizer and weed deterrent.

Next Best: Place yard waste in 20-40 gallon reusable containers with handles (old style trash cans) to reduce the need for continual purchase of single-use bags.

Still Good: Place yard waste in paper bags designed for yard waste collection or in compostable plastic bags that meet ASTM D6400 standards.

Drop-off will be available Tuesday – Saturday at the following locations and hours:

  • Public Works Yard - 10500 Lower River Rd (at Bethany Lane)  - 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  • Public Works East District Yard - 595 Hubbards Lane  - 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  • Public Works Waste Reduction Ctr - 636 Meriwether Ave - Tu-Fri – 9 am-5 pm and Sat.  9am-3pm

Waverly Dog Run Update

In the past decade, numerous dog parks have popped up across Jefferson County, giving pets room to safely run and play. But Southwest Louisville residents noticed a problem: The parks were mostly concentrated in the eastern half of the county, and they had to travel at least 10 miles to reach them.

That will change by the end of the year when the Louisville Dog Run Association opens a new location in Waverly Park off Arnoldtown Road. Read more from the Courier Journal here!
