TOPIC TITLE 1 2nd Annual Early Childhood Family Conference

TOPIC DETAIL 1

We are excited to announce that registration is now open for the 2nd Annual Early Childhood Family Conference on October 14, 15 and 16th at the Clarion Hotel in Lexington KY.

The Shut Up Sisters Take the Stage Friday Evening!

Gina (Terrasi) Gallagher and Patricia (Terrasi) are sisters who share a love of humor and writing (excluding checkwriting). They are also among the growing number of parents raising children with disabilities. Inspired by the success of their sisterly heroines, Mary Kate and Ashley, and fed up with listening to parents brag about their “perfect children” and never asking about theirs, the sisters decided to seek therapy by writing a book. So in 2006, they self-published their first book, Shut Up About Your Perfect Kid! The Movement of Imperfection, which explores the humorous, heart-warming side of raising an imperfect child in a world preoccupied with perfection.

* We are also pleased to announce that we have added an extra day for the event!

This conference is free to families.

* Registration is on a first come first serve basis with limited spots available.

* Activities and sessions will be available to children birth to five and their siblings.

* We are pleased to announce the return of the “Ask the Doctor session” as well as some new topics for Early Childhood Parents.

* A full conference list of detailed presentations will be included in registration packets.

TOPIC TITLE 2 BBB Warns: Don’t Fall for Scam Involving KFC’s Good Name

TOPIC DETAIL 2

BBB of Louisville, Southern Indiana, and Western KY is warning consumers to not fall for a scam that involves Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). BBB received a complaint from a consumer who stated she was contacted by the company with an e-mail stating that if she completed a survey she would get a $100 gift card from KFC. This e-mail DID NOT come from Louisville YUM! Brand’s KFC!

The consumer went on to state that she completed a lengthy survey on KFC related items, other companies, and even submitted her e-mail address, home address, and phone numbers. The KFC logo and copyright symbols were prominently displayed on the screen. The consumer states after she completed the survey, the next day four or five telemarketers started contacting her about the survey. Another consumer stated the survey e-mail came from freechickensurvey@arlissnovemarticulate7372.info. This e-mail is NOT related to KFC or any of its vendors.

YUM! Brands (the parent company of KFC), is a BBB Accredited Business. The company states, “This is not a KFC sponsored survey or have we given them the rights to use our logos in the survey that was e-mailed out. We have received about 10 complaints that we have already responded to. Our legal team is aware of this. We’re in the process of an investigation into what and who is behind this since at best, it’s a scam.”

KFC will not be sending $100 gift cards to those who completed the survey, since this is a scam. If you receive an e-mail like this, file a report with the FBI at www.ic3.gov, rather than filing a complaint against YUM! or KFC.

Telephone Problems

The Coalition for the Homeless has been experiencing problems with our telephone lines. We have no voice mail or fax service. We recently discovered that our calls were going to a voice mail somewhere but we do not have a clue where. If you have left a message on that system and we haven’t responded, that’s the reason why.

We have been waiting for a part to come in and expect our telephone service to be back up and running by the latter of next week. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

TOPIC DETAIL 8

Medicare Turns 46

A Message From Medicare Rights Center President Joe Baker on Medicare's 46th Anniversary

Medicare turns 46 on Saturday, a cause for celebration despite these uncertain times. One year before Medicare was signed into law, nearly half of older Americans did not have health insurance, and only one-quarter were estimated to have adequate hospital insurance coverage. This revolutionary program has given millions of Americans retirement and financial security, improving their quality of life and ensuring their continued health and safety.

Most agree that the need to raise the debt ceiling is urgent, but now is not the time to enact potentially dangerous deficit-reduction policies that threaten Americans’ quality of life over the long term. In forging a way forward, we need to be sure to adopt a balanced approach that includes increased revenues in order to prevent catastrophic cuts to Medicare and Medicaid that would result in increased costs for beneficiaries and decreased access to care. Most importantly, we must remember that growing costs in Medicare are a symptom of a larger problem: growing costs in the health care sector overall. Fortunately, delivery system reforms included in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and other proposals—like the Medicare Drug Savings Act, which allows for drug rebates under Medicare—address this problem without penalizing beneficiaries.

Every year at the Medicare Rights Center, we are fortunate enough to work with thousands of people with Medicare and their caregivers who share their lives with us. Some stories are tragic, some are frustrating, but all are inspirational, and together they demonstrate the necessity of Medicare and drive us to work to improve and preserve the program for current and future generations.

Medicare is at the center of the deficit reduction debate, and some proposals would forever change the program. In honor of Medicare’s birthday, we invite you to visit our Facebook page and share your answer to a simple question: What do you like about Medicare? What makes Medicare work for you, and why must the program be preserved? We want to hear from you. Please leave your comment at www.facebook.com/medicarerights.

New Report Examines Plan Finder, Difficulties of Choosing a Part D Plan  People with Medicare who are assessing their Part D prescription drug plan options should have access to a manageable number of meaningfully distinct choices, according to a report released this week by the Medicare Rights Center. The report, Planning Ahead: Recommendations for Plan Finder, Inspired by Beneficiaries, examines data from a survey of Medicare Rights Center clients who used Plan Finder, an online tool created and maintained by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

According to the report, many beneficiaries find the plan details outlined by Plan Finder difficult to decipher, and confusion over discrepancies between Plan Finder and “Medicare & You,” the official Medicare handbook, are a recurring theme. CMS has made significant improvements to Plan Finder in recent years, at the request of people with Medicare and their advocates. But with so many plans to choose from—last year, every beneficiary had access to more than 28 stand-alone prescription drug plans—it may be difficult for even the best online tool to completely untangle the knot of plan options. Many survey respondents became frustrated with the plan selection process, and some resorted to sticking with their current plans out of convenience, even when their existing plan was more expensive or restrictive.

As a result of these findings, the report makes four primary recommendations:

  • Beneficiaries and their advocates should be able to identify the most comprehensive and affordable plan upon their initial Plan Finder search.
  • Because beneficiaries often find the data presented difficult to decipher, it may be beneficial to reorganize the data and create a decision tree to help guide them through the plan selection process.
  • As complementary resources, “Medicare & You” and Plan Finder must provide consistent information. Because “Medicare & You” is published before Plan Finder data for the upcoming year is finalized, it should point to Plan Finder as the most up-to-date resource for drug plan information.
  • CMS should build on the current initiative to consolidate plans that lack meaningful differences. Beneficiaries should have access to a manageable number of meaningfully distinct plan choices.

Read the report.
