Councilman David Yates spoke with WDRB on Wednesday afternoon about the importance of the Dixie Highway Redevelopment Plan and its role to make a more vibrant economical center of South Louisville an even safer corridor for both pedestrians and vehicles.

"The project is part of a master plan, to be completed in 5 phases, that is expected to make the road safer.
“It's still overall planning, and we have 5 million dollars that has been appropriated by the General Assembly. That will be the first phase and we'll continue to lobby and work and make sure the rest of the money comes in to a very needed project,” said Councilman David Yates, who represents District 25.
Councilman David Yates says accidents on this stretch of road hit close to home for him as well.
Since the time this project was announced in December.. there have been at least 4 pedestrian fatalities.
“I can't count the amount of people I've known that have been lost on that corridor and it's one of the busiest corridors in the whole city,” said Councilman Yates.
The upcoming project is expected to add safety improvements, including sidewalks, raised medians with trees and shrubbery, crosswalks, and better signage.
While the planning stage is still in the works, there's hope by Councilman Yates, and local business owners, that the improvements will be made sooner than later."

A Message from Ken Williams, President of the Auburndale Neighborhood Association:
"A good neighbor is someone who is considerate and friendly and
wants to work with you because you share the same neighborhood and have common
ground.
On July 9th several ANA Neighbors joined hands in the
heat and went to work, picking up trash, pulling weeds, cutting bushes, and
cutting high grass on Old Third Street Road.
I
was stunned and amazed of the turn-out. My
faith has been renewed!!! Special people equals -ANA special place.
Thanks. Ken"
Councilman Yates appreciates these special efforts to help keep our neighborhoods clean and safe. It is wonderful people that volunteer and help create strong bonds throughout our community. Please share your story with us and your community to promote this kind of behavior and enhance everyone's responsibility to their own land and neighborhood.
Call to Action- Volunteers needed for July 19th Brightside Cleanliness Assessment Teams
The Brightside Community-Wide Cleanliness Index was launched in April at 10 sites –approximately a half-mile corridor in length – within the 26 Metro Council districts, for a total of 260 sites community-wide as a clean initiative of One Bright City. The Cleanliness Assessment empowers citizens to become long-term caretakers of our community and creates a mechanism that holds us accountable for making measurable improvements in the community. Our goal is to complete 3 assessments per year in each district.
Our second round of assessments will be held on July 19th. We are looking for Brightside Champions to take the lead on the assessment teams, working to coordinate with their team and then reporting their findings back to Brightside. We are also in need of volunteers to join our teams as assessors for all council teams. Each team will travel together to the 10 sites that have been identified in your perspective district. You and your team will score the sites individually and we will use that data to determine the score for each district and the city as a whole.
We hope you will consider joining us. With the data collected we will be able to shine a light on our strengths and recognize any of our weaknesses as a whole in our community. We need volunteers like you to achieve these goals – with the work you do we can make strides towards turning those weaknesses around and make our city One Bright City!
If you are interested in volunteering please contact Lorri Roberts, Event & Volunteer Coordinator at Brightside. (502)574-4167 or lorri.roberts@louisvilleky.gov.
