Old-fashioned Ice Cream Social at Farnsley-Moremen, July 13

The entire family is invited to enjoy a day of fun on the banks of the Ohio River as Riverside, the Farnsley-Moremen Landing hosts an “Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Social”, July 13 from 1:00-5:00pm. The historic property is located at 7410 Moorman Road.

The event features live music from The MacDaddies, a magic show with Dave Cottrell, and several activities for kids, including miniature train rides, pony rides, farm animal petting zoo, and a souvenir brick-making activity.  Visitors will also be able to participate in an archaeological dig underway on the Riverside grounds, take tours of the circa 1837 Farnsley-Moremen House, and browse through the Friends of the Southwest Library book sale.

A highlight of the event is the Ice Cream Eating contest!  Ten children and six adults will be selected to compete.  Prizes will be awarded in the children’s contest for “fastest eater”, “messiest eater”, and “neatest eater”, while the adults will vie for the “first to finish” award!

Concessions will include:  Ehrler’s ice cream in great old-fashioned ice cream flavors, and Shack In the Back BBQ serving up ribeye or pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs, cheese fries and more!

Admission to the event and the children activities are free. Tours of the historic home are half-price for this event.

Opportunities for Youth for Free Summer Learning

culture

Just because school isn’t in session for many of our youth doesn’t mean that we have to disregard engaging, quality, and FREE learning opportunities:

Cultural Pass: Children and students can visit some of the region’s greatest cultural organizations for free this summer, thanks to the creation of the new Cultural Pass for Children that was suggested during the Vision Louisville initiative. The pass allows general admission access to one child and chaperon (if the child is under 16). Only one visit per pass per institution will be allowed. Special exhibits and programs are not included with the pass. Children and parents can pick up a pass (a punch card) from their local Louisville Free Public Library branch or Metro Parks Community Center starting June 9. The pass is good through August 13.

Teen Summer Reading: This initiative through the Louisville Free Public Library rewards teens from 6th 12th grade just for reading! Youth can simply pick up a Teen Summer Reading form (or download it here), read 6 books, eBooks, magazines, or graphic novels and do 1 activity listed between June 1 and August 9. When youth return the card to any public library location by August 9 and get great prizes from free martial arts classes to a Wendy’s frosty. This program gives prizes just for doing something we already love to do—reading! Be sure to tell all the youth you know about this free opportunity.

Volunteer: Results at this volunteer search engine site show there are plenty of opportunities for youth to volunteer in Louisville. Volunteering through Brightside Louisville can help youth foster leadership skills by allowing them to plan their own neighborhood cleanup at any time, for which Brightside can supplement free cleaning supplies! Animal House also enjoys youth volunteers, who can share the responsibility of socializing cats and walking dogs. The next Animal House volunteer orientation is July 10, from 6 – 7 pm, at 3516 Newburg rd.

Southwest Segment of Louisville Loop to Close Temporarily

A 0.8 mile segment of the Louisville Loop in southwest Louisville to be closed intermittently for approximately 30 months. Beginning Monday, July 21, MSD’s Bells Lane sewer facility construction project will necessitate the temporary closure and detour of a 0.8 mile segment of the Louisville Loop pedestrian/bike trail. The trail will be closed from Camp Ground, north to Algonquin Parkway. (Map attached to advisory)

The first closure is expected to begin on or about Monday, July 21 and is projected to last approximately 8 weeks.  Signs will be posted at each end of the closed segment as well as along the 1.8 mile detour route.
