 Just because school isn’t in
session for many of our youth doesn’t mean that we have to disregard engaging,
quality, and FREE learning opportunities:
Cultural Pass:
Children and students can visit some of the region’s greatest cultural
organizations for free this summer, thanks to the creation of the new Cultural
Pass for Children that was suggested during the Vision Louisville initiative.
The pass allows general admission access to one child and chaperon (if the
child is under 16). Only one visit per pass per institution will be allowed.
Special exhibits and programs are not included with the pass. Children and
parents can pick up a pass (a punch card) from their local Louisville Free
Public Library branch or Metro Parks Community Center starting June 9. The pass
is good through August 13.
Teen Summer Reading: This
initiative through the Louisville Free Public Library rewards teens from 6th
– 12th grade just for reading! Youth can simply pick up a Teen Summer
Reading form (or download it here), read 6 books, eBooks,
magazines, or graphic novels and do 1 activity listed between June 1 and August
9. When youth return the card to any public library location by August 9 and
get great prizes from free martial arts classes to a Wendy’s frosty. This
program gives prizes just for doing something we already love to do—reading! Be
sure to tell all the youth you know about this free opportunity.
Volunteer: Results at this volunteer search
engine site show there are plenty of opportunities
for youth to volunteer in Louisville. Volunteering through Brightside
Louisville can help youth foster leadership skills by allowing them to plan
their own neighborhood cleanup at any time, for which Brightside can
supplement free cleaning supplies! Animal House also enjoys youth volunteers,
who can share the responsibility of socializing cats and walking dogs. The
next Animal House volunteer orientation is July 10, from 6 – 7 pm, at 3516
Newburg rd.
