FLAGS4VETS 2014 NATIONAL MEMORIAL DAY VIGIL

Flags4Vets 7th Annual National Memorial Day Vigil will take place at Noon on Saturday, May 24, at Waterfront Park.  Co-hosting this event, with Flags4Vets, will be Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, and Congressman John Yarmuth, both long-time supporters of Flags4Vets and of many other patriotic causes.  This event is open to everyone.

Flags4Vets, Administrator of the event, invites all Kentuckiana Citizens to attend a short ceremony presided over by The Honorable Mayor Greg Fischer, starting on Saturday, May 24 at Noon.  Following the ceremony, volunteers will begin placing 15,000 grave flags, one-by-one, spelling out USA in a 170 by 450 foot pattern.  The project is expected to be completed by nightfall.  It is not necessary to sign up or register to volunteer.  JUST SHOW UP!  Volunteers may help for a couple of hours, or just stop by to place a flag or two in tribute to members of their family who now serve, or have served, in the United States Armed Forces, or as other First Responders.

Fred Moore, Director of Flags4Vets, said: "The goal of Flags4Vets is for Louisville to become the permanent location of the National Memorial Day Vigil.  The NMDV has grown, from its inception seven years ago, to placing flags on Veterans' graves in forty-two states."

This family oriented event will provide children and adults alike the opportunity to show Veterans and First Responders that we appreciate the sacrifices they have made to protect us and ensure our freedom.

After Memorial Day, just like in each of the last six years, the 15,000 flags will be collected and distributed across the USA to be placed on veterans' graves.  6,000 of the flags will be held in reserve to honor the graves of veterans in the Kentuckiana area.

Flags4Vets is a National certified non-profit 501(c)(3).  The mission of Flags4Vets is to privately fund U.S. Flags for every U.S. Veteran's grave and to organize a corps of volunteers to place those flags on Veterans' graves. Further; we advance the cause of the U.S. Flag through educational outreach programs and events to the general public, schools, scouting groups, veterans' organizations, corporations, clubs, and other interested parties.  We have placed U.S. Flags on the graves of U.S. Veterans in 42 states.

You can help by making a tax deductible donation at www.Flags4Vets.com.  Your support is greatly appreciated.

“This has become a true signature event for Louisville – a demonstration of how much our residents love being outdoors and participating in family-oriented healthy exercise and recreation,” Mayor Greg Fischer said.

Subway Restaurants is the title sponsor of Hike, Bike & Paddle, with presenting sponsors, Coca-Cola, Norton Healthcare and Thorntons.

"SUBWAY Restaurants are proud to once again sponsor the SUBWAY Fresh Fit Hike,

Bike & Paddle events.  The events give people an opportunity to lead healthy,

active lifestyles," said Bill Kolodey, field marketing manager for Subway Restaurants.

“Coca-Cola is proud to be a Presenting Sponsor of the Mayor’s Hike, Bike and Paddle activity on Memorial Day,” said Roy Potts, director, Public Affairs & Communications for the Coca-Cola Company. “We recognize the uniqueness of consumers’ lifestyles and dietary choices. All of our products can be part of an active, healthy lifestyle that includes a sensible, balanced diet, proper hydration and regular, physical exercise.”

“Norton Healthcare is honored to support this year’s Hike, Bike & Paddle event,” said Allison Ledford, director of Employee Wellness at Norton Healthcare. “With a mission to respond to the health care needs of our community, our goal is much the same as the Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Movement — to create a culture of health and wellness in our hometown. And just like the Healthy Hometown Movement, we know that maintaining wellness is easier when people are surrounded by options that make it easy and fun to be healthy.”

"We are proud to call Louisville our hometown and support the movement into a healthier tomorrow," said Thorntons, Inc. president and CEO Matt Thornton. "Our sponsorship is a sign of our commitment to the community where we live, work and play."

Paddlers will have the option of a 3 or 6-mile paddling course from Harbor Lawn in Waterfront Park to Cox Park and back. TARC will provide a free shuttle back to the Waterfront for the paddlers wishing to complete the upriver-only 3-mile course.

Paddling participants will launch their canoes or kayaks at the river ramp located at the Harbor Lawn of Waterfront Park. Paddlers can drop their boats off at the “Green” parking lot near River Road and Witherspoon Street. from 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.

For cyclists, a 15-mile route will roll through Old Louisville, down Southern Parkway and into Iroquois Park, one of Louisville’s signature Olmsted-designed Metro Parks. Turnoffs will provide options for cycling routes as short as two miles.

The hiking route, which is wheelchair-accessible, will allow walkers to explore downtown along Third St. before turning at York St. in front of the main branch of the Louisville Free Public Library. Walkers may bring dogs to participate in the hike, as long as the animal is on a leash and owners pick up waste during the walk as required by law.

Both the cycling and walking routes will be marked with signage and will have plenty of water stops to refill water bottles. The Louisville Bicycle Club is providing “bike captains” to help cyclists obey the rules of the road. “Bike doctors” will be in Waterfront Park before the ride and along the route to assist cyclists with any equipment problems.  Louisville Metro Police will provide traffic assistance at key intersections and the Louisville Metro EMS bicycle team will patrol the route.

A healthy marketplace with nutritional snacks, free children’s activities, and informational booths will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Waterfront Park. There will also be free tours on the river in the large “Voyager Canoe.” Yoga, Tai Chi, Zumba, Nia and Pickleball demonstrations will be offered along with group participation.

3,000 free T-shirts will be available for those arriving early and completing a brief survey. The Brain Injury Association will distribute 500 helmets to riders who don’t have one. Coca-Cola will distribute 2,500 pedometers to the hikers.

As an added bonus, all participants in the Hike, Bike & Paddle will get free admission to the Kentucky Reggae Festival happening Memorial Day at the Water Tower. The free passes will be available at the Reggae Festival booth at the Hike, Bike & Paddle.

Participants are encouraged to be “green” and bring their own water bottles which they will be able to fill in Waterfront and Iroquois Parks as part of the Louisville Water’s Pure Tap To Go program. For those without a water bottle the Louisville Metro Parks Foundation will have them available for sale on-site.

This is the tenth year for the events, which are held each Memorial Day and Labor Day. The events are part of the city’s Healthy Hometown Movement, created to encourage Louisville residents to be more active and make healthier lifestyle choices. For more information, go to www.hikebikeandpaddlelouisville.com.

Additional support is provided by Louisville Public Media, Landmark Community Newspapers, CBS Outdoor and Insider Louisville.

LOUISVILLE’S FIRST ANIMAL BLOOD BANK AT JEFFERSON ANIMAL HOSPITAL

DO YOU KNOW WHAT BLOOD TYPE YOUR PET IS?

As Louisville’s only 24 hour emergency and wellness hospital, Jefferson Animal Hospital and Regional Emergency Center has seen the demand for blood products increase significantly over the past few years. Demand for this precious resource often exceeds supply and when blood is not available delays in treatment can mean life or death for our patients.     Due to a recent shortage in blood products for dogs and cats in the national blood bank system, Jefferson Animal Hospital and Emergency Center has made a business decision to establish the first Regional Blood Bank for Dogs and Cats in Louisville.

Animals need blood for a variety of reasons including major surgery, trauma, cancer, anemia and blood loss due to disease. We use a large amount of blood supplies for our emergency services including packed red cells, whole blood and plasma. Our goal is not only to supply our own needs but also the needs of all area veterinarians and emergency hospitals in the region.

Both Jefferson Animal Hospital Emergency and Jefferson Animal Hospital Fern Creek can screen your pet as a potential donor, perform an easy screening blood test for canine and feline blood type. Then your pet will become an Animal Hero Donor to provide blood products to save lives. As a donor, you must agree to 4 donations per year for 2 years.

But WE NEED MORE BLOOD DONOR HEROES!   Specifically dogs over 50 pounds, between 1 and 6 years old, of good temperament, spayed or neutered, up to date on vaccines and on monthly preventatives. Please call with any questions!  502-966-4104

or email: jahdonorhero@gmail.com.

KEEP TRACK OF CRIME IN YOUR AREA

BE A TEAM LEADER!

The LMPD 7th Division has an aggressive community partnership strategy through a virtual team model which is built on the Neighborhood Block Watch program.

The virtual team approach recognizes that time and distance can be significant obstacles to overcome in efforts to have successful, unified effort to combat crime in your neighborhood.

The virtual team concept is a proven way to work together to achieve success even though there is limited face-to-face interaction. The LMPD 7th Division provides periodic training for team leaders and sends out weekly crime bulletins and alerts through the Internet (like below). We can work together to impact crime, but we need your help and here is how you can make a difference in your neighborhood.

1 – Find a location where you can have a meeting (church, firehouse, government center)

2 – Communicate the time and location to people in your neighborhood, we can help you distribute flyers or you can use an existing e-mail network (e.g., homeowner's association)

3 – Get your neighborhood team registered with LMPD.

4 – Start impacting crime in your community immediately. For example, almost 90% of thefts from cars in our division are the result of UNLOCKED car doors.  Public awareness is the key to crime prevention, and we need your voice and your ability to spread the word in your community.

5 – Contact Sgt. Todd Brimm at todd.brimm@louisvilleky.gov and join our team today!

City Refines Online Maps to Display Crime in Parks

Incidents in parks now tied to physical address

Louisville Metro Government has refined the city’s online maps to more accurately display crimes that occur in local parks. This improvement resulted from questions that arose from the recent crime by teenagers and young adults that started in Waterfront Park and moved into parts of downtown.  Before the change, crimes in parks were being reported by GPS coordinate, but the city’s crime map only accepted physical address. As a result, crimes in parks were automatically displaying in a parking lot at 5th and Liberty streets, the geographic coordinate for “the City of Louisville.”  The maps now display significant crimes that happen in parks, from Waterfront to Shawnee to Cherokee to Jefferson Memorial Forest.

The city’s maps show Part I FBI crimes — the most serious charges that includes homicides, auto theft, assaults, vandalism and robbery. The city’s technology team is now using physical addresses for the parks so that the crimes are more accurately displayed. Because of the vast areas covered by parks, crimes will show as a single pin. People should click on the pin to see all crimes in that area of the park.

Since the crime map was introduced in 2007, it has only displayed FBI Part 1 crimes. LMPD and Metro Technology are in discussions about expanding the information on the maps to include all crime.

To view the maps, and to search for crimes by neighborhoods or address, visit http://www.louisvilleky.gov/metropolice/crimemaps

The crime maps are part of the Fischer administration’s commitment to open data and transparency -- and part of a broader effort to put more information and services online. In the past three years, the city has increased crime information available to citizens by creating crime text and email alerts by police beat. To sign up, visit www.louisvilleky.gov/metropolice

If you have a block watch or a neighborhood association, you can purchase "Operation Identification" stickers and place them inside a window facing outward. This communicates to a potential burglar that your property has been cataloged by serial number and photographed for immediate identification (e.g., jewelry or other unique items). This means that a burglar's chance of getting caught increases significantly.  Did you know that pawn shops have to almost immediately log pawned items into a data base that LMPD can access when trying to identify stolen property?  For more information, go to:
