Free Diabetes Classes Begin May 10
The Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness will hold a series of two free classes for individuals interested in learning about and managing diabetes. Classes will be held on Saturday, May 10 and May 17 at the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health & Wellness at 400 East Gray St. Classes are free and attendance at both classes is encouraged. Both classes begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at noon.

May 10, Class 1, What is diabetes? How do I check my blood sugar? What types of food should I eat? What do I do when I’m sick? How do I count carbohydrates?
May 17, Class 2, How can I staying healthy with diabetes? How do I read a food label? What do I need to know about fat and salt? How do I take care of my feet? How do I keep a healthy weight and stay active?

8th Annual Southern Obesity Summit

Become part of the largest regional obesity prevention event in the South on October 5-7 in Louisville, Kentucky!
Share your insights and expertise with your peers. Share your great work with the community and spark new developments in the force to fight obesity.
The breakout sessions at the Summit will help attendees develop strategies and provide resources and tools to use in their work to reverse the obesity epidemic through working together with other southern states. There will be opportunities during and around the Summit for meeting, sharing, and learning from others in our region. Each proposal must address one or more of the obesity prevention pillars identified in prior Summits:
Early Childhood
Schools
Nutrition Policy
Food Access
Physical Activity
Worksite Wellness
Healthcare and Healthcare Systems
To submit proposals please click here. We welcome your proposals. Don't forget, the deadline for submissions is Friday May 16th. You will be contacted by July 8th, once your proposal is reviewed and selections are made. Upon approval, you will still be able to register at the early registration rate along with your presenter discount of $50.

 Night Climbing with Outdoor Afro KY!
Join Outdoor Afro KY for night climbing at Jefferson Memorial Forest!
Saturday, May 24, 7:00 PM to 10:00PM Challenge yourself on our 52 foot climbing tower…in the dark! Learn basic climbing and belaying techniques and gain self-esteem, confidence and problem-solving skills while tackling this “high-altitude” obstacle course at night! This program is for ages 10 and up. (A parent or legal guardian must accompany any participant under the age of 18.) Please wear tennis shoes and long pants or shorts (with inseam greater than 5 inches.) Bring your headlamp! Program will meet in the Horine Section of Jefferson Memorial Forest. All participants must pre-register and pre-pay before day of course by calling 502-368-5404.

Also save-the-date for African Americans in National Parks Day June 7th! We will be taking a trip to Mammoth Cave to learn about the history of the Bransford Family at Mammoth Cave.
