Iroquois Park Overlook Restoration Project

park

In partnership with Olmsted Parks Conservancy, Louisville Metro Parks and Recreation is preparing for a $1 million project at Iroquois Park’s Northern Overlook. The project seeks to enhance the overlook by improving its sustainability, make it less prone to erosion, and create a vibrant and welcoming public space.

The first stage of the Northern Overlook Restoration Project is underway, with Metro Parks crews removing existing concrete, paving and stonework at the site. A design plan, expected to be completed by the end of summer, will be developed with public input through a series of meetings. Some initial construction may take place by the end of the year. The Northern Overlook and the Corbly Trail will be closed to public use during this construction pre-work phase currently underway. The overlook will be closed to vehicular traffic indefinitely as the project progresses.

An estimated timetable for the project for 2014:

Winter (current) – Pre-construction site prep

Spring – Site plan public meetings

Summer – Plans and design announced

Fall – Phase 1 construction

Free Springtime Soil Testing

soil

Just in time for spring planting, the Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District is offering free soil testing to property owners wanting to plant vegetable gardens or improve lawns!

The first guideline of responsible fertilizer application is to take a soil sample and have it analyzed to determine fertilizer needs. Soil samples are analyzed for specific soil nutrients to determine proper application rates of fertilizer and lime for optimum plant growth.

The Jefferson County Conservation District is hopeful this program will not only assist landowners with applying proper nutrients for healthy soils but also address non-point source pollution and its effect on the community's water quality. A standard soil test is all one normally needs for a fertility evaluation. The SWCD will provide up to 2 vouchers per household to cover the processing fee for a standard soil test.

People wishing to participate in this incentive program must request a soil test voucher from our office. Vouchers are available by email, mail or you may drop by the office to pick up a voucher(s).

Email your voucher request to:  joy.edwards@ky.nacdnet.net. Email must include your name, physical address, phone number, and number of vouchers requested (maximum of 2 per household). Questions-call 502.499.1900.

brain injury

Brain Injury Awareness

"Since anyone can sustain a brain injury at any time, it is important for everyone to have access to comprehensive rehabilitation and ongoing disease management. Doing so eases medical complications, permanent disability, family dysfunction, job loss, homelessness, impoverishment, medical indigence, suicide and involvement with the criminal or juvenile justice system. Access to early, comprehensive treatment for brain injury also alleviates the burden of long term care that is transferred to tax payers at the federal state and local levels."

- Dr. Brent Masel, National Medical Director for the Brain Injury Association of America

Statistics

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a blow, jolt or bump to the head or penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain. 2.4 million people including 475,000 children, sustain a TBI in the U.S. each year.  5.3 million individuals live with life-long disability as a result of TBI. 52,000 people will die.  275,000 people will be hospitalized.  1.365 million people will be treated and released from an emergency department.

TBI's are caused by falls (35%); car crashes (17%), workplace accidents (16%), assaults (10%),  and other causes (21%). TBI is a contributing factor to a third (30.5%) of all injury-related deaths in the United States. About 75% of TBIs that occur each year are concussions or other forms of mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI).

Just as no two people are exactly alike, no two brain injuries are exactly alike. For some, brain injury is the start of a lifelong disease process. The injury requires access to a full continuum of medically necessary treatment and community-based supports furnished by interdisciplinary teams of qualified and specialized clinicians working in accredited programs and appropriate settings.

Cost

The costs to treat brain injuries are staggering:

  • Average hospital-based acute rehab is about $8,000 per day
  • Range for post-acute residential is about $850 to $2,500 per day
  • Day treatment programs (e.g., 4 hours of therapy) are about $600 to $1,000 with no room/board
  • According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the U.S., direct medical costs and indirect costs of TBI, such as lost productivity, totaled an estimated $76.3 billion each year.

Adopt-A-Pet of the Week

tibbles

Mr. Tibbles is a great dog who loves people. He loves to cuddle and will lay his head in your lap for head pets. He has a fondness for toys and comfy beds so he can relax and get his cuddle on.   While Metro Animal Services can’t guarantee an animal is housetrained, Mr. Tibbles waits until he is outside to go to the bathroom.  He has a great, patient temperament and is just a good dog.

You can visit Tibbles at the Animal House Adoption Center, 3516 Newburg Road or contact LMAS at (502) 473-PETS (7387) for more information.

skunk

Skunk is my cat of the week. She is your typical tortie—lively, animated, talkative and sassy. She rolls over and shows her belly making sure you know she is an affectionate one. She loves to play with feather toys and will chirp at you when she’s ready to take off running! She does well with other cats and after a slow introduction warms up to dogs.

Skunk is spayed and current on all her shots.
