RAMP FROM I-64 EASTBOUND TO I-65 SOUTHBOUND TO CLOSE JULY 8

The interstate ramp from I-64 East to I-65 South will close in two weeks and remain closed for up to 1,000 days.  This is the only ramp closure for 2013 in connection with the new Downtown Crossing.

The closure, scheduled for the night of July 8, is necessary to help maintain the flow of traffic on I-64, I-65 and I-71 as crews work to rebuild the Kennedy Interchange.   This ramp is the least used by drivers in the interchange, but keeping it open would add to traffic congestion and lengthen construction time for the project.

Signs will go up this week, alerting drivers of the impending closure.  The suggested detour for through traffic is I-264 West (Shawnee Expressway).  Drivers seeking local access are advised to plan ahead and decide which surface streets will work best to reach their destinations.  Signage will advise drivers heading to downtown hospitals to use the 9th Street exit to Chestnut Street.

Call Before You Dig!!!

Each digging project should prompt a call to 811 to prevent damage to underground lines, injuries, and disruption of service. Residents can have their lines marked by calling 811 at least two business days before performing any excavation work. Excavation includes...

• Installing a mailbox

• Installing a fence

• Planting trees or shrubbery

• Building a patio or deck

• Excavating a garden

• Installing a pool

• Any other work that requires digging

After calling 811, members from all affected utility companies in the area — including LG&E will mark the location of the lines.
