From December 14-21, to correspond with Junk Pick Up dates, River Metals Recycling (RMR) is inviting 9th District Residents to receive higher rates for recycling scrap metal: an additional $10 per ton for ferrous scrap (appliances, sheet metal, cars) and $0.05 per pound extra for nonferrous items (cans, copper, aluminum, stainless steel). The Louisville Metro Affordable Housing Trust Fund, Inc. is hiring an additional part-time, temporary (January-April 2013) community organizer to assist with securing the revenue source for the Trust. Apply by December 17, 2012 by emailing rachelmhurst@gmail.com. Find the job description online at http://www.louisvilleky.gov/lahtf.
About the LAHTF: The Louisville Affordable Housing Trust Fund (LAHTF) was established by the Louisville Metro Council in 2008 to invest public funds in the kind of housing our community needs: housing for people on fixed incomes like seniors and people with serious disabilities; for young families starting out; for veterans; and for working people whose wages are not enough to live in Metro Louisville. The Housing Trust Fund is founded on the principal that a place to call home opens the door to opportunity, and that the whole community does better when everyone has a decent place to call home.
The 2nd annual "Give-A-Jam to End Homelessness" will be held on Thursday, December 20th beginning at 6:00pm at the Clifton Center, 2117 Payne Street. The evening will showcase many of Louisville's most talented artists including John Gage, Justin Lewis, Hog Operation, Scott Carney, Andrea Davidson, Tyrone Cotton, Beady, Joan Shelley & Anna Krippenstapel, Mike Tracy & Friends, Stephen Mattingly, Will King, and several unannounced guests. The event will also feature a sumptuous array of soups and stews from local restaurants including The Irish Rover, Proof on Main, Taco Punk, and The Silver Dollar. Each of the participating restaurants and musicians are donating their time and talent, and the event will be staffed entirely by volunteers to ensure that all proceeds will go to benefit the Coalition for the Homeless. Guests can enjoy a cash bar and bid on a variety of silent auction items. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door, at cliftoncenter.org, or at Carmichael's Book Store, 2720 Frankfort Avenue. For more information call (502) 636-9550. Learn more at www.cliftoncenter.org/giveajam.

For many years we've asked youths to help bag leaves that several adult men blow into the street from every front yard. 2012 was very successful. Kids and adults worked for a short while in the rain on November 3 and we counted 16 4-foot-high yard waste paper bag filled; then 8 youths and 12 adults worked together on Nov. 11 to fill 71 bags. The final week, when all workers were treated to Little Caesars Pizza at noon, 7 youths were credited with 64 bags and 14 adults pitched in to fill the remainder of the total of 210 yard waste bags. The youths can earn $2.00 per filled bag and some were so diligent that one boy and one girl earned over $25 each for their two weeks of this effort. No youth is excluded; some have a parent hold the bag for them. The total number of filled were 210. And, the grounds look clean for the holidays.

Louisville Metro Parks offers hundreds of gift-giving options for the holidays, making it easy to find just the right gift for that ‘hard-to-buy-for’ person. With a selection that includes items for golfers, nature enthusiasts, history buffs, art and music lovers, there really is something for everyone on the list!
The gift shop at Historic Locust Grove carries a wide variety of locally-made products, such as tea, bourbon-based food items, wood-ware, jewelry and pottery. The shop also carries historic reproduction pieces drawn from life in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, including pewter and other household goods.
Parks’ other historic property, Riverside, the Farnsley-Moremen Landing, offers unique stocking stuffers including locally-produced honey, books on local history, historical reproductions of children’s items—small toys, games, bonnets and hats—and hand-rolled beeswax candles in seasonal colors.
Give the gift of art and music with a gift certificate from the Metro Arts Center. Certificates can be purchased in any amount and used for a wide variety of lessons for adults and children, including painting, pottery, screenprinting and silversmithing, as well as guitar and flute.
For lovers of the great outdoors, the Welcome Center at Jefferson Memorial Forest carries wildlife guides, nature-themed jewelry, sweatshirts and caps. Gift cards are available for purchase, too, and can be used for any of the gift shop items, as well as camping fees, shelter rentals and children’s summer camp fees. Purchase $5 or more and receive a free paw print gift bag.
A gift card from the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center can be applied toward memberships, swimming lessons and more. On a cold winter’s day or evening, there’s nothing better than staying active and warm inside the aquatic center, for lap swim, water exercise, and family pool time, or working up a sweat in the weight room that features Cybex, free weight and cardio equipment.
