I am District 1 Councilwoman Attica Scott’s new fall intern: Kelsey Goff. I am 18 years old and a recent graduate of Doss High school. I now attend school at Simmons College of Kentucky where I am a Simmons Scholar. I am involved in community service, attend church twice a week at St. James Missionary Baptist Church, and take a leadership class every Friday morning. I am grateful and truly blessed with this opportunity with District 1 Councilwoman Attica Scott. ~Kelsey

Stanley has help to keep “Old Louisville’s” area clean and formed 5 block watches in that area. She has also formed 9 block watches throughout Melody Manor and has helped multiple areas clear trash and drug sales. Stanley has also notified city officials of need in property damages and state roads in need of traffic lights repairs. She has helped organizations passed out their flyers and wrote letters for neighbors to get public officials involved. Stanley has also asked the Mayor to visit Lake Dreamland to see their needs; she has earned and deserves the Louisville’s Next Top Neighbor Award.

Councilwomen Attica Scott and Tina Ward-Pugh joined Semonin Realtors and Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana to raise the roof in September for a new Habitat for Humanity home. The two organizations are excited about the potential of their unique partnership model to inspire others to join forces to help a local family realize the classic American dream of owning their own home.

The one-story ranch-style home, with four bedrooms and two baths, will be built for Toemica McDougal and her family. It is located in District 1 on Sunset Gardens, off Cane Run Road in the Shively area. McDougal is a Louisville native and Certified Nursing Assistant who works two jobs and has four daughters who range from 11 to 18 years of age. She also has two grandchildren, one of whom will live in the new home.

“I’m really excited to start building because I’ll know it’s real,” said McDougal, who hopes one day to help others become home owners. “When my house is finished and I’ve settled in, I’m looking forward to coming back as a volunteer with Habitat.”

“We look forward to getting starting on this build and making a local family’s home ownership dream come true. Helping others in need never goes out of style and the Girl Scouts are a great example for current and future leaders to follow,” said Pam Catlett, Vice President of Semonin Realtors.

The cost for building this new green or eco-friendly home is $45,000. This will be one of the first homes Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville will build to Energy Star 3.0 standards. This means greater cost and attention to HVAC systems, attention to water management, and close scrutiny of the air infiltration envelope. Other energy-savings features will include a tighter duct system, use of an extra sealant on the foundation, and use of an ecoseal technique and blown insulation in the walls. In support of the house’s green designation, GE and Housing Partnership Inc. are donating a hybrid water heater for this home.

Semonin agents and staff have contributed a total of $22,500 for the house this year, which is the company’s 15th Habitat build. Throughout the past 14 years, Semonin has contributed more than $450,000 for the Habitat homes the company has built in Louisville, New Albany, Elizabethtown and LaGrange. During this time period, more than 2,500 Semonin agent and staff volunteers have worked together to complete new Habitat homes.

Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana raised $22,500 to cover its half of the home’s total cost. The Kentuckiana Council is taking part in the build as a special “take action” project to celebrate Girl Scouting’s 100th anniversary this year.

“Committing to fundraise for the project represents a unique commitment for our council since Girl Scouts would not typically raise money for another organization,” said Lora Tucker, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana. “We appreciate this wonderful opportunity to partner with Semonin Realtors on such a worthwhile project that shows our girls such a great example of leadership in action.”

CEC AT-A-GLANCE!

The Catholic Enrichment Center (CEC) is an extension of the Archdiocese of Louisville’s Office of Multicultural Ministry and is located in the historic Parkland neighborhood. It was established to provide holistic cultural enrichment, formation and academic development. We offer most of our programs for FREE or minimum cost.

We host a number of activities and programs such as HHHomework/Tutoring, Aerobic Line Dancing, Tai Chi, Dare to Care and our St. Jude Family Focus program. Specific events in October include:

* SAT/ACT Prep –The cost is $25 for the course, which is happening every Saturday now through October 20, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Individual study sessions available prior to the test date October 27, 2012.

* City-Wide Spelling Bee – Sign up dates Saturdays, September 29 and October 6, 9:00am – 1:00pm. “Bee” preparation session sponsored by the West Louisville Math & Science Project Inc. Saturday, October 6. Grades 1- 12 welcome. Entrance fee $5 per person; word lists, rules & regulations distributed at registration.

* Project Warm Workshop – The workshop is on Thursday, October 11th at 11am. It teaches you how to hang clear, interior window covers, demonstrates utilizing foam to seal air holes, and more – plus you get the supplies free! Please call to sign up so that enough supply packets are present to all participants.

* Healthy Tasting Class – On Tuesday, October 9th, this class will teach you how to eat better by cooking tasty, healthier meals for you and your family. The classes are the 2nd Tuesday of the month, 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Please call to register so the preparation of food is appropriate for the amount of people attending.

* Karate – Sensei Taki McQueen instructs youth ages 7 and up in the “Shotokan” style of Karate. The classes are Mondays & Wednesdays, 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. The cost is $25 per month.

* Cub Scout Den Meeting – On Thursday, October 4th, Pack 49 is looking for new members and this is their next scheduled meeting. Cub Scouts is an organized way to build social and leadership skills for boys in the 1st thru 5th grades. Parents are welcome!
