YMCA Black Achievers Visit City Hall
Councilman Herndon recently welcomed students from the YMCA Black Achievers Government and Law Cluster to Louisville Metro City Hall for a behind-the-scenes look at local government and public service.
Students toured City Hall, learned about the responsibilities of a Metro Council member, and discussed District 4’s Life Skills Initiative. Their thoughtful questions sparked engaging conversations about leadership, civic engagement, and community impact.
We thank the YMCA Black Achievers program for empowering young people to explore future careers and develop the skills to become tomorrow’s leaders!

Celebrating Natalie Harris' Service and Leadership
Councilman Herndon was honored to attend a breakfast celebrating Natalie Harris as she enters her final year of service as Executive Director of the Coalition for the Homeless.
Throughout her career, Natalie has championed collaborative, compassionate, and effective solutions to address homelessness and expand housing opportunities in our community. Her vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment have made a lasting impact across Louisville.
We were proud to join the Louisville Affordable Housing Trust Fund in recognizing Natalie as the 2026 Champion of Affordable Housing and celebrating her remarkable contributions to our city.
Louisville is stronger because of the people who invest in our community, uplift others, and create opportunities for the next generation.
Harry Johnson Jr. was one of those people. Through his beauty supply business, mentorship of barbers and cosmetologists, and encouragement of aspiring entrepreneurs, Johnson made a meaningful difference in the lives of so many.
Councilman Herndon invites the community to come together for the unveiling of an honorary street sign celebrating Johnson’s life, legacy, and lasting contributions to Louisville.
The intersection of 26th Street and Broadway will be named in his honor; a lasting tribute to a man whose impact reached far beyond his business.

Dashboard highlights flu, COVID-19 activity across Jefferson County
The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness has a respiratory virus dashboard that gives the public a look at flu and COVID-19 activity across the community. Flu arrived in Louisville a little early this year. Wastewater monitoring detected Flu A in mid-September.
Since September 20, 663 cases of flu and one flu outbreak have been reported. 527 COVID-19 cases and no outbreaks have been reported since September 20.
The dashboard is updated weekly and includes reports received from hospitals, laboratories, and private healthcare providers. It shows number of cases and outbreaks includes demographics such as sex, race, ethnicity and age groups for children and adults. It also shows rates of each illness per ZIP code.
You can check out the respiratory virus dashboard on our website.
As flu season approaches, now is the time to make sure your family is protected. Health experts recommend that everyone 6 months of age and older receive an annual flu vaccine, including children.
The best time to get vaccinated is September or October, before flu viruses begin spreading widely. However, getting vaccinated later can still provide important protection throughout the respiratory virus season, which typically runs from November through April.
Flu vaccination helps prevent infection, reduces the severity and duration of illness, and can help prevent serious complications. For children, vaccination is one of the best ways to stay healthy, avoid missed school days, and protect family members who may be more vulnerable to severe illness.
Get vaccinated at LMPHW
To schedule an appointment at the LMPHW Immunizations Clinic, call 502-574-5380.
LMPHW also offers a mobile immunization clinic that can bring vaccines directly to community events. Organizations interested in hosting a clinic can learn more and submit a request through our website.
Track flu activity in Louisville
Staying informed can help you make healthy decisions for yourself and your family. Our Flu Data Dashboard provides current information on flu activity reported by local hospitals, laboratories, and healthcare providers.

This fall, consider taking a break from raking and leaf blowing. Fallen leaves provide valuable overwintering habitat for many insects, including important pollinators. Removing or mulching leaves can destroy beneficial insect larvae and eliminate critical habitat. If you'd prefer a tidier yard, rake or blow leaves into a pile around the base of a tree and leave them there through the season.
Interested in learning more about the benefits of "leaving the leaves" and native yard-friendly landscaping practices? Visit Wild Ones Louisville for resources and information.
Remember...Never, blow leaves into roadways and remember to keep catch basins clear for drainage!
Final Pop-Up Drop-Off Event of the Year
Residents still have one more opportunity to participate before the end of the year. The final Pop-Up Drop-Off event will take place on Saturday, November 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at UofL’s Shelby Campus.
In addition to the materials normally accepted, this event will feature a special opportunity to recycle household batteries, which are not typically accepted at Pop-Up Drop-Off events.
Whether you're cleaning out your garage, decluttering before the holidays, or finally recycling those old batteries you've been setting aside, this event offers a convenient way to keep valuable materials out of the landfill and ensure they are handled responsibly.
Join us in making a positive impact on our community and environment.
Don't let your pumpkin haunt the landfill!
More than a billion pounds of pumpkins are thrown away each year in the U.S. Instead of sending yours to the landfill, give it a second life!
- Compost pumpkins and gourds in your backyard compost bin.
- Add them to your yard waste collection (check with your hauler, as service varies throughout Louisville).
- Bring them with yard waste to a Pop-Up Drop-Off event (our last event of the year is Nov. 21).
- Donate them to local farms, where cows, chickens, and other animals may enjoy them as a seasonal treat.
Let's keep organic waste out of the landfill and put those pumpkins to better use! ♻️🎃

Mayor Greenberg and LMPHW announce youth-driven “Louder Than Smoke” anti-vaping campaign
 |
Mayor Craig Greenberg and the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness are encouraging young people and families to “clear the air” about vaping through the Louder Than Smoke prevention campaign.
Created with input from local youth, the campaign provides straightforward information about the risks of vaping and nicotine addiction through social media, public transit advertisements, and educational resources. Its message, “Together, we are louder than smoke,” empowers young people to make informed decisions and resist misleading claims that vaping is harmless.
The campaign website, LouderThanSmoke.com, offers facts about vaping, resources for youth and parents, and information about the health impacts of nicotine on developing brains. Since its launch, the campaign has reached millions of young people online and connected thousands to educational tools and resources.
As communities observe Healthy Lung Month, the campaign serves as an important reminder that preventing nicotine addiction today can help build healthier futures for tomorrow.
Parents, caregivers, educators, and young people are encouraged to visit LouderThanSmoke.com to learn more, access resources, and start meaningful conversations about the dangers of vaping.
Construction Begins on the Reimagined Belvedere
 |
Construction is officially underway on the transformation of Louisville’s Belvedere, marking the beginning of a long-anticipated project to revitalize one of downtown’s most iconic public spaces.
Mayor Craig Greenberg announced the start of construction on the reimagined Belvedere, a signature riverfront destination that has hosted concerts, festivals, and community gatherings for more than 50 years. Opened in 1973, the Belvedere sits above Interstate 64 and the Riverfront Parking Garage, both of which require significant infrastructure improvements. These necessary repairs have created an opportunity to modernize and enhance the plaza for future generations.
“This reimagined Belvedere will be one of our city’s great public spaces,” Mayor Greenberg said. “Built with community feedback in mind, it will serve as a welcoming, vibrant destination for residents and visitors year-round.”
Work will begin with critical repairs to the Riverfront Parking Garage and will be completed in phases to minimize disruption. The garage will remain operational throughout construction, ensuring continued access for downtown businesses, attractions, and visitors. Following Thunder Over Louisville and the Kentucky Derby next year, work will expand to the Belvedere plaza itself, with project completion anticipated by Thunder Over Louisville 2030.
Highlights of the New Belvedere Design
The redesigned Belvedere will feature several exciting amenities designed to create a more accessible, family-friendly, and vibrant riverfront experience, including:
-
A multi-use walking path connecting Main Street to the Ohio River.
-
A signature pavilion for concerts, performances, fitness classes, and community events.
-
A nature-inspired children's play area developed in partnership with Bernheim Forest, featuring interactive play elements and a water feature.
-
Improved riverfront access with safe, accessible connections to the Wharf and Louisville Loop.
-
Expanded green space, including nearly 350 new trees and extensive native landscaping.
A Community-Driven Vision
The project reflects extensive community input gathered since 2025. Nearly 1,500 residents shared feedback through surveys and interactive engagement tools, expressing a desire for more trees, shade, green space, family activities, concerts, markets, and cultural programming. Those priorities have helped shape both the design and future programming plans for the Belvedere.
The renovation is supported through a combination of local, state, federal, and private funding, including a $5 million grant from the James Graham Brown Foundation. The design was created by internationally renowned Heatherwick Studio in collaboration with Louisville-based KNBA Architects.
Once completed, the new Belvedere will provide a dynamic destination for recreation, entertainment, community events, and everyday enjoyment along Louisville’s waterfront.

Understanding 988 and knowing when to call
The United States launched 988 in 2022 as an easy‑to‑remember number for anyone experiencing a mental health, emotional, or substance‑use crisis. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is free, confidential, and available 24/7/365, connecting callers with trained counselors who listen, offer support, and help you stay safe.
You don’t have to be suicidal to call.
Anyone—at any age—can reach out for help, and you can also contact 988 if you’re worried about someone else. Veterans, service members, and their families can be connected with specially trained counselors. Interpretation is available for people who speak languages other than English or Spanish.
How to reach 988 (https://988lifeline.org/)
Why people contact 988
People reach out for many reasons, including anxiety, depression, substance‑use concerns, stress, trauma, loneliness, or simply needing someone to talk to.
What happens when you call
A trained counselor will:
- Listen without judgment
- Check on your safety
- Talk through what you’re experiencing
- Offer support and local resources
Most people feel calmer and more hopeful after connecting with a counselor.
Privacy and safety
You don’t have to share personal information. Counselors only involve 911 in rare situations when someone is in immediate danger.
LHOME's Home Repair Access Loan helps low- and moderate-income owner-occupants pay for essential repairs like roofs, gutters, and HVAC systems.
Loans go up to $24,999 at a fixed 4% rate with terms up to seven years. There are no application, credit check, or origination fees, and radon testing is included at no cost. Payments on a $10,000 loan run about $137 a month over seven years.
The program is funded by a Community Development Block Grant award from Louisville Metro, the city's first CDBG-funded home repair revolving loan pool. Funding is available now. Homeowners with traditional credit challenges are encouraged to apply.
Council offices can help by sharing this information through newsletters, social media, and neighborhood association meetings. LHOME is also glad to present at community meetings, provide flyers in bulk, or connect with churches, senior centers, and service providers who hear from homeowners with repair needs.
Homeowners can apply online at www.lhomeky.org. For questions or referrals, contact Kevin Ratliff (kratliff@lhomeky.org, 502.657.1297) or Marisa Tribble (mtribble@lhomeky.org, 502.657.5943).
