Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday! I hope you've had a great week. It looks like we'll have nice weather for those of you preparing to trick-or-treat tomorrow. Please be safe by doing things like wearing light-colored clothing if possible, adding reflective tape to costumes and treat bags, and inspecting candy before anyone eats it. If you'll be driving around tomorrow - especially after dark - please use caution. Kids get excited, of course, and can sometimes forget to look both ways when crossing the street, going from house to house, etc.

Earlier this week, the Kentucky State Auditor released a Special Examination of the Louisville Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD). You can find the report under '2026 Reports' here. In addition to an examination of the long-term challenges faced by MSD (in part due to consent decrees and debt service payments), the report also includes examples of 'questionable expenditures' that exacerbate concerns of continued rate increases. This is a serious matter and one I expect we'll take up soon to help give the public more confidence that the dollars sent to MSD are being spent as they should. I will let you know of further developments.

I want to remind everyone of the elections on Tuesday. As I said last week, there are federal, state, and local races on the ballot as well as a proposed constitutional amendment. Remember that if you want to vote in the races for mayor or Metro Council, you must vote for a specific candidate for it to count. You'll still have the option of voting straight ticket, but doing only that means you will not have cast a vote for mayor, Metro Council, judicial candidates, etc.

Next week will mark one year since the tragic UPS plane crash in our community. During the Metro Council meeting last night, we took time to remember the event through the experience of a young woman who lost her father and daughter in the crash. It was a poignant moment hearing about the impact her father and daughter had (and have) on others and how family, friends, and neighbors have since rallied around her. There are several observances planned Wednesday for those looking for a way to honor the families, first responders, and others whose lives were changed that day. Please let me know if you are interested, and I'll be glad to share the latest details.

I hope you have a great weekend. As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to my office if we can be of assistance.
