Dear Neighbor,

With Fall finally here, there are many events in and around our City to enjoy the cooler weather and celebrate the changing seasons. Of particular note is the CycLOUvia event this Sunday on Bardstown Road.

Have a good weekend,

Oct 17 | Pop Up Drop Off Event

Ready to clear out unwanted items and recycle responsibly? Join us for our next Pop-Up Drop-Off event on Saturday, October 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 3515 Newburg Rd.

Bulky plastic collection is back! We will once again be accepting bulky plastic items at this event. This is a great opportunity to recycle larger plastic items that aren't allowed through curbside recycling programs.

We're also excited to continue our partnership with Goodwill Industries of Kentucky, which will be onsite collecting donations of gently used clothing, household goods, and furniture. Donating usable items helps extend their life while supporting Goodwill's mission of strengthening our community through education, employment, and career services.

Please don't arrive early! While we appreciate everyone's enthusiasm, we strongly recommend not arriving before the event begins at 10 a.m. This location does not have room for vehicles to wait, and you will not be allowed to turn into the event until 10 a.m. Arriving during the event hours helps keep the process safe and efficient for everyone.

We look forward to seeing you at 3515 Newburg Rd. on October 17 and helping you recycle, donate, and dispose of items responsibly. Together, we can reduce waste, increase recycling, and keep usable items out of the landfill.

Oct 18 | CycLOUvia returns to Bardstown Rd

CycLOUvia returns to Bardstown Road on Sunday, Oct. 18, from 2 to 6 p.m., turning a familiar street into a place to play, explore and connect.

The stretch from Grinstead Drive to Douglass Loop will welcome people walking, biking, rolling, skating and dancing. Hosted by the Louisville Metro Department of Transportation, this free event is open to all ages and abilities.

Bring your neighbors and make an afternoon of it. Visit a local shop, grab a bite to eat or enjoy the Highlands at a slower pace. At 2:30 p.m., gather near Carmichael’s Bookstore on Longest Avenue for a new brand unveiling celebrating the Highlands and its local businesses.

If you’re driving nearby, plan ahead. Bardstown Road will be closed to vehicle traffic from Grinstead Drive to Douglass Loop from 2 to 6 p.m. Drivers should use alternate routes, follow posted traffic controls and allow extra travel time.

Eastern Parkway will remain open to cross traffic. Whether you’re attending the event or passing through, watch for others and follow traffic directions at the crossing.

Come for a stroll, stay for the neighborhood fun and discover what makes Bardstown Road a great place to spend a Sunday afternoon!

Early Oct - Nov | Gray St under I-65 closed

GraySt

Work continues on the I-65 Central Corridor project, with Gray Street now closed beneath I-65 as crews begin demolishing the old bridge. This work is part of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s (KYTC) I-65 Central Corridor project.

The Gray Street detour is expected to remain in place through early November. While the temporary closure may change your usual route, there are still several ways to travel through and around the area.

Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and follow posted detour signs while work is underway.

Stay up to date on construction progress, closures and information to help plan your route at: I65CentralCorridor.com.

New School Bus Safety Law now in effect

Bus

Kentucky's updated school bus stop law, created through House Bill 7, expands when drivers must stop for a school bus with its stop arm extended and red lights flashing.

What changed?

Drivers must now stop in all lanes and in both directions, including on:

  • Four-lane roads with a center turn lane
  • Highways that are not divided by a physical barrier or unpaved median

When don't you have to stop?

The only exception is when you're traveling in the opposite direction on a roadway with four or more lanes that is separated by an elevated barrier or an unpaved median.

Know before you go

Passing a stopped school bus is dangerous and illegal. Drivers who fail to stop can face:

  • $300 fine for a first offense
  • $500 fine for each additional offense within three years

Slowing down and stopping for school buses helps protect children as they get on and off the bus. A few extra seconds can make all the difference.

Oct 1-30 | Boo at the Zoo

Louisville Zoo is proud to announce the return of Louisville’s premier Halloween event. Marking its 45th year, Boo at the Zoo presented by Meijer invites families to enjoy festive fall fun on Thursday through Sunday evenings, Oct. 1-30. Tickets are on sale now at louisvillezoo.org/boo.

Tickets are all-inclusive and include Boo at the Zoo admission, parking, Spooktacular Carousel, “not-so-itsy-bitsy” Spider House and the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow attraction.

Children and adults are invited to dress up in their wildest costumes for the after-hours event.

Boo at the Zoo turns the Zoo into a living storybook, complete with favorite characters brought to life. There will be music, photo opportunities around every corner and, of course, a safe place to trick-or-treat for kids 11 and under. Guests are encouraged to bring their own trick-or-treat bags, but reusable treat bags will be available for purchase at the Zoo’s Gift Shop (while supplies last).

Community Ministries Food Drive

Right now the Association of Community Ministries’ pantries desperately need food - especially shelf stable items like canned meats and proteins, hearty soups, rice and beans.

As a result, ACM has been calling on concerned Louisvillians, their friends, family and co-workers, to join them in a city-wide food drive which concludes TODAY!

Donations of non-perishable foods can be dropped off at any of the 13 community ministries during regular business hours or at one of their partner drop-off sites including: River City Bank Branches, Republic Bank Branches, Mark’s Feed Store and other area locations (see full list below).

Primary needs include Canned Meats and Proteins, Hearty Soups, Beans and Rice. Meanwhile, each of their 13 ministries have listed additional in demand items on ACM’s website: LouisvilleMinistries.org. In addition, cash donations can be made directly to the Association or to any of  their 13 individual members by clicking on the appropriate links located there.

Together, we are ensuring that whether a neighbor is in Portland, Jeffersontown, Shively, Middletown, or anywhere else in Jefferson County, they have fresh, nutritious food on their table. No zip code left behind. No neighbor left hungry.

Many Ministries. One Mission.

Louisville Tourism Grant Opportunities

Organizations and community groups seeking to improve Louisville's visitor experience may be interested in two grant programs offered by Louisville Tourism. These funding opportunities are designed to support projects, events, and infrastructure that attract visitors and strengthen Louisville's reputation as a premier destination.

Since its launch in 2008, Louisville Tourism's Destination Development & Events Grant program has awarded more than $2 million to support local events, attractions, and initiatives that drive visitation and encourage overnight stays. Funding may be available for new festivals, special events, visitor experiences, exhibits, and marketing efforts designed to attract audiences from outside the Louisville area.

New this year is the Destination Sense of Place Grant, which focuses on tourism infrastructure and placemaking projects that enhance the visitor experience while highlighting Louisville's unique character and identity. Eligible projects may include:

  • Public art installations
  • Wayfinding and visitor signage
  • Streetscape and lighting improvements
  • Outdoor recreation, trails, and parks
  • Beautification projects
  • Destination arrival experiences
  • Visitor transportation and circulation improvements
  • Cleanliness and safety initiatives

Eligible applicants include governmental entities, nonprofit organizations, neighborhood associations, business associations, and other community-based organizations.

Community organizations with ideas that could make Louisville a more welcoming and attractive destination are encouraged to explore these funding opportunities. Projects should focus on areas with significant visitor activity and ideally build upon existing tourism infrastructure.

For eligibility requirements, funding guidelines, application information, and deadlines, scan the QR code in the accompanying flyer or visit Louisville Tourism's website for additional details.

Do you have a project that could strengthen Louisville as a destination?

These grant opportunities may help turn that vision into reality.

From LMPD: Help Prevent Vehicle Break-Ins and Theft

The Louisville Metro Police Department is asking residents to take a few simple steps to help prevent vehicle thefts and break-ins as the city continues to see an increase in these crimes.

Remember: Lock, Take, Hide.

  • Lock your car every time you leave it unattended.
  • Take your keys and firearms with you. Never leave them inside your vehicle.
  • Hide your belongings or remove valuables from plain sight.

These simple precautions can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim of theft.

LMPD is actively working to address these crimes and recently arrested several individuals connected to vehicle break-ins as part of an ongoing effort to target offenders. However, prevention and public awareness remain important tools in keeping our neighborhoods safe.

If you observe suspicious activity, please contact LMPD's non-emergency line at (502) 574-7111.

Together, we can help make Louisville a safer and stronger community.

Our office routinely publishes information on upcoming public meetings and regarding planning and zoning cases in and around District 26. Our posting in this forum is not an official notice. This list may not be comprehensive nor does it include other zoning matters decided upon by zoning authorities other than Louisville Metro Government.

While we intended to expand the scope of our zoning notices, our office reverted to the former policy of relaying the information we receive from Planning and Zoning. We are limited by ordinance and state law to provide the publicly available information.
