Hello Neighbors and Friends,

As we approach the fall and winter holiday season, it is important that we remain vigilant and look out for one another. Unfortunately, car break-ins often increase during this time of year. A few simple precautions can help protect your home, vehicle and neighborhood.

Please remember to:

  • Lock the doors to your home and vehicle—even when you are home or parked in your driveway.

  • Never leave valuables, packages, firearms or bags visible inside your vehicle.

  • Check your home surveillance cameras and make sure nothing is obstructing their view.

  • Review your camera settings and confirm that they are working properly.

  • Check the lighting around your home. If you have dark areas or blind spots, consider installing motion-activated floodlights.

  • Keep garage doors closed and secure sheds, gates and other outdoor structures.

  • Trim bushes and trees that may provide hiding places near doors and windows.

  • Make sure windows and doors are locked, and consider reinforcing door frames and sliding doors.

  • Avoid announcing vacations or extended absences on social media.

  • Ask a trusted neighbor to watch your home and collect packages when you are away.

  • Report suspicious activity promptly, and do not confront suspicious individuals yourself.

The resource magnet I sent out a couple of months ago includes emergency numbers and important contact information for LMPD and our local police departments. These agencies are quick to respond and do an excellent job caring for District 7 residents. Please call on them when needed—and remember to call 911 in an emergency.

I also want to wish everyone a safe and fun Halloween! It was wonderful seeing the hundreds of participants at Saturday’s Trunk or Treat event, conducted by the 8th Division of LMPD and hosted by District 7, along with several other Metro Council district offices.

If you are not participating in handing out candy, please turn off your porch light. Drivers should use extra caution in our neighborhoods because children, goblins and ghouls may be wearing dark clothing and running from house to house.

Enjoy this spooky holiday, stay safe, and try not to eat too much candy—the candy you purchased or the candy in your kiddos’ treat bags!

I-71 Closures Starting Today!

t

District 7 motorists should prepare for overnight closures related to the I-264/U.S. 42 Improvement Project. The I-71 South ramp to I-264 West (Exit 5) will close from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27 and Wednesday, Oct. 28, with traffic detoured via Zorn Avenue. On Oct. 29 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., I-71 North at mile point 4.9 will close. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes and allow extra travel time.

The interstate project is expected to be completed by the Fall of 2027. The work is being carried out by Cleary Construction Inc. of Monroe County, Kentucky. More details, including project timelines and traffic impacts, will be shared online as work progresses. Motorists are encouraged to sign up for email and text alerts regarding weekly traffic impacts pertaining to the project.

The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur. For the latest traffic and travel updates across the Commonwealth of Kentucky, visit goky.ky.gov. Information specific to District 5 counties is also available on Facebook and X.

Metro Council News

mcn

The Louisville Metro Council held its regularly scheduled Council committee meetings this week. My colleagues and I continued committee work on several matters affecting Louisville residents. The Government Oversight, Audit and Appointments Committee advanced appointments to the Civilian Review and Accountability Board and the TARC Board, while the proposed SAFE Law remained held in committee.  The Labor and Economic Development Committee also received updates on workforce development and the economic impact of Kentucky’s nonprofit sector and advanced measures involving public health services, economic development incentives, and a senior living expansion project.

The Appropriations Committee considered funding for neighborhood infrastructure, pedestrian and traffic safety improvements, community programs, and local events. Of particular importance to District 7, the committee approved my $10,000 Neighborhood Development Fund appropriation to the SAR Foundation in support of Wreaths Across America at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery. Our goal is to build on that commitment through additional Council district contributions and reach $20,000 in support of this effort to honor our veterans.

The next Metro Council meeting is Thursday, October 29, 2026, at 6:00 p.m.

You may remember Jeni Church of the City of Lyndon, who won two tickets to Bourbon & Beyond as a door prize at Muffins with McCraney. Jeni recently shared a few photos from her experience, and it looks like she put those winning tickets to good use!

Thank you, Jeni, for sharing your photos with us. I always enjoy hearing from residents after our events and seeing our door prizes turn into memorable experiences. I hope you had a wonderful time. Thank you for sharing!

Traffic Enforcement Update

kk

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office continues to provide traffic enforcement throughout District 7. From April through September 2026, deputies recorded 101 enforcement actions in District 7, including 61 citations and 40 courtesy notices. A courtesy notice is a written warning and does not carry a fine. Enforcement activity occurred at 50 unique locations throughout the district.

The highest level of activity occurred in July, with 38 enforcement actions, followed by September with 25. Wednesday was the busiest day of the week for enforcement activity. Brownsboro Road accounted for the largest concentration of activity, followed by Westport Road, Herr Lane, Bowling Boulevard, and Overlook Road. Speeding remained the leading citation category, followed by registration/plate, insurance, and traffic-control/right-of-way violations.

Fall Health Alert

BITES

Even as temperatures cool and fall activities ramp up, mosquitoes and ticks remain active across Louisville. The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness reminds residents that mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus can remain active until the first significant frost, and ticks continue to thrive in leaf-covered outdoor areas. When enjoying hikes, festivals, parks, or yard work this season, be sure to use insect repellent, wear protective clothing, check for ticks, and eliminate standing water around your home. Residents can report mosquito concerns through Metro311 and learn more about mosquito prevention, fogging schedules, and tick safety at Louisville Metro Public Health & Wellness.

In Remembrance

UPS

On Wednesday, November 4, Louisville will mark one year since the crash of UPS Flight 2976 with a citywide observance honoring the 15 lives lost and supporting the families, loved ones, and community members affected by the tragedy.

At 5:14 p.m., churches, places of worship, and other participating institutions will ring bells and carillons for one minute. At 5:15 p.m., the bells will stop, and community members are invited to observe one minute of silence. Residents can also participate by wearing yellow or lighting their homes or buildings yellow that evening.

A memorial event will begin at 4:30 p.m. at Grade A Auto Parts, 4568 Melton Avenue. Those unable to attend may watch the event live on Mayor Greenberg’s social media channels or Louisville MetroTV.

Wherever you are on November 4, please take a moment to remember the lives lost and stand together with all those who continue to be affected by this tragedy.

Inhalant Awareness

Inhalants

Many common household and workplace products, including spray paints, markers, glues, cleaning fluids, aerosols, and gases, contain substances that can be dangerous when intentionally inhaled. Although these products are not intended to be used as drugs, inhalant misuse can cause serious short- and long-term health effects, including damage to the brain, liver, kidneys, hearing, and nervous system. Inhalant use can also be fatal, even after a single use.

Parents, caregivers, and community members are encouraged to learn more about inhalants, the products that may be misused, and their potential health risks. Learn more about inhalants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Stay Healthy

pre

Flu season is here, and health officials are encouraging residents to take steps now to protect themselves and their families. An annual flu vaccine is recommended for everyone 6 months and older and can help prevent illness and reduce the risk of serious complications. In addition to getting vaccinated, frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when sick can help limit the spread of flu and other respiratory illnesses. To schedule a flu shot through the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness, call 502-574-5380 or learn more at LMPHW Immunizations Clinic.

Meet the Cubs

zoo

Looking for a fun fall outing? Head to the Louisville Zoo to see Frankie, Masha, and Mira, the Zoo’s nearly five-month-old Amur tiger cubs. The playful sisters can now be viewed daily in their outdoor habitat, with the best viewing opportunities between noon and 3 p.m. As the first Amur tiger cubs born at the Louisville Zoo in more than two decades, the trio has quickly become a favorite attraction for visitors of all ages. Plan a visit and watch these endangered cubs grow, explore, and play.
