Whitehall to Host Smartphone Photography Workshop

whitehall

Whitehall is pleased to announce that it will host a program entitled “Smartphone Photography” on Tuesday, September 22nd, at 6:00 p.m. Participants will join instructor Ellen Sears as she discusses how to get the most out of your smartphone when taking photographs in nature. The program will begin indoors with a slideshow followed by an opportunity to take photos on Whitehall’s grounds. The cost is $15 per person and reservations are required. Students may register here: https://www.historicwhitehall.org/whitehall-workshops.

Ellen Sears was a classroom teacher for 33 years teaching art, math, and literacy through the arts. After leaving the classroom she worked at the state level with teachers and districts on best practices in math and literature. For the past 10 years she has been using her phone to document dawn at Beckley Creek Park and posting to Instagram and Facebook.

In the Whitehall Workshop series, Whitehall House and Gardens will host educational workshops for adults that focus on plants within the disciplines of art, gardening, science and forestry. We partner with flower farmers, florists, arborists, horticulturalists and naturalists to bring fresh new programming to plant lovers in Louisville.

Proceeds from the program will benefit Whitehall, a historic house and estate garden owned and operated by the not-for-profit Historic Homes Foundation. Originally built in the mid-1850s as an Italianate farmhouse, the house was transformed in 1909 into the iconic Classical style mansion we know today that epitomizes the stately beauty of early twentieth-century architecture. At just under ten acres, Whitehall’s grounds offer the public multiple special gardens that are a horticultural treasure to the community.

The Dot Experience Update

With the opening of The Dot Experience on October 30, the exhibits are coming to life, and there’s plenty for guests to touch, hear and explore.

In the main gallery, guests will discover what it’s like to navigate the world with a cane as they move across a variety of floor textures, from brick and wood to astroturf and more. They’ll also learn the story of Buddy, the first guide dog, and have the opportunity to touch a replica of his harness and get a sense of what it’s like to navigate with a guide dog.

And that’s just the beginning. Throughout the museum, guests can choose from a variety of audio pods, explore hands-on experiences and even play chess on a 3D-printed replica of a chessboard belonging to renowned musician Andrea Bocelli.

Visit The Dot Experience website.

Crescent Hill Construction Activity

Louisville Water has multiple projects underway at the Crescent Hill Water Treatment Plant. Here is an update on the projects.

Reservoir Relining Project

We've finished the first year of a multi-year project to reline the Crescent Hill Reservoir. The first milestone has been reached: The contractor has removed the sediment in the north basin, which is the basin closest to the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center. Now, we're ready to remove the old liner and install the new one.

As we reline the north basin, we will also address the railing that surrounds it. We have started removal of the railing, which should take approximately three months. Louisville Water remains committed to keeping the reservoir open to the public when the project is completed, so the railing must be improved. It is in poor condition and does not meet today’s safety standards. After working for more than a year on options to restore the existing railing, we determined the cost to rehab was nearly four times the cost of replacing it with a similar railing. We will restore sections of the original railing for display at the reservoir and other Louisville Water facilities, such as the WaterWorks Museum. A new railing will allow us to reopen the reservoir to the public.

Once the north basin is complete, we will duplicate the process for the south. We hope to finish the project in 2029 and then reopen the reservoir.

Crescent Hill Powder Activated Carbon System

We are building new silos near Frankfort Avenue and Reservoir Avenue that will allow us to store larger amounts of powder activated carbon. This carbon is critical to our water treatment process and continuing to meet drinking water standards.

Reservoir Avenue at Frankfort Avenue will close for one week starting August 28 so we can install new pipe across Reservoir Avenue. This closure coincides with a Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center closure. Except for this one-week closure, Reservoir Avenue will reopen for traffic on weekends to accommodate access to the Aquatic Center.

Constructing the silos should last another 12 months, and for safety, we will keep the north sidewalk closed between Pennsylvania and Reservoir Avenues. It was necessary to construct a temporary access road between Pennsylvania Avenue and the construction site. Residents should expect normal construction activity and noise during the project. Once we complete the work, we will remove the access road and restore and reopen the sidewalk.

Residual Line Project at Crescent Hill

Louisville Water is constructing a new residual line to remove treatment residuals from the plant. This line will connect with the recently constructed residual line we installed along Zorn Avenue and River Road. Our contractor is currently working between the railroad tracks and Reservoir Avenue at on our property near the entrance of our plant.  Due to this project and the powder activated carbon system project, access to the green space remains limited.

The New TARC Network has arrived!

After more than two years of public meetings, and countless hours in planning, building, testing, and pushing this huge project forward, the New TARC Network is here!   Navigating a fiscal cliff is not unique to public transit in Louisville, it is something transit agencies across the country are struggling to address. Thanks to the preparation and forethought TARC gave to the problem, the results of our work are being watched and studied by other city agencies to see how they can address similar issues and come out stronger than they otherwise would have been through service cuts alone.     Our initial numbers (a couple weeks in from launch) are looking strong, including:

  • Daily ridership averaging 16,244
  • Downtown Transfer Center (DTC) boardings Monday through Friday averaging 1,414 per day—higher than our initial projections of 1,000 per day
  • Daily On-Time Performance (OTP) averaging 80.16%

A huge thank you to the TARC team and all our community members for making this launch successful. This was a big project with a lot of moving parts, and everyone showed up with dedication, teamwork, and determination. Everyone worked together to solve concerns, help riders understand the new system and get them where they need to go, and kept everything moving. Because of all this hard work, our community now has a more sustainable and reliable transit network—and that’s something to be proud of.

The New TARC Network Downtown Transfer Center

A big piece of the New TARC Network’s success comes from the construction of a Downtown Transfer Center (DTC). An on-street temporary center at Muhammad Ali Boulevard and 8th Street opened it’s 11 bays with the first day of New TARC Network service. Several adjacent streets have been converted to two-way to allow for bus circulation, and major portions of sidewalks are being leveled or replaced to ensure ADA accessibility. The DTC is in a central location where all of the different buses serving downtown can come together in a scheduled “pulse” that will allow passengers to transfer between routes in 5-10 minutes. It features bus shelters, benches, pylons, maps, wayfinding signage, and real-time bus arrival screens.   TARC is currently conducting a study to identify potential sites for a permanent Downtown Transit Center.  More information about this project will be provided as soon as it becomes available.

Secondhand September: Give pre-loved items a new life

secondhand

September is a great time to rethink the way we shop. Secondhand September is an annual initiative that encourages people to choose used items instead of buying new whenever possible. Whether it's clothing, furniture, books, toys, home décor, or sporting equipment, purchasing secondhand helps keep usable items in circulation and out of the landfill.

Buying secondhand has benefits beyond reducing waste. It can save money, conserve natural resources, and reduce the energy and raw materials needed to manufacture new products. Every item purchased secondhand represents one less item that needs to be produced, packaged, and transported.

There are many easy ways to participate in Secondhand September:

  • Shop at thrift stores, consignment shops, and resale businesses.
  • Visit local yard sales, estate sales, or flea markets.
  • Explore online marketplaces for gently used items.
  • Donate unwanted items that are still in good condition.
  • Organize a clothing swap or share items with friends, family, and neighbors.
  • Repair or repurpose items instead of replacing them.

When it's time to clear out closets, garages, or storage areas, remember that many items may still have value to someone else. Donating usable goods helps support local charities and gives those items a second life.

This September, challenge yourself to buy secondhand first. Small changes in our shopping habits can make a big difference in reducing waste and supporting a more sustainable community.

Before you buy new, ask yourself: Could I find it secondhand? You may save money, discover something unique, and help protect our environment at the same time!

Anti-Racism Challenge

anti racism

We are gearing up for the next 28-day Anti-Racism Challenge (ARC) that begins October 2nd. You may have participated in health or exercise challenges before and know that the point of committing to these challenges is to change our habits. For example, in a health challenge, we make goals to exercise each day, get enough sleep, eat healthy food; the hope is that when the challenge is over, these things will become the new normal. That's what we want the ARC to do -- raise awareness, invoke commitment, and make being an anti-racist the new normal in our everyday lives. To learn more and sign up, go to listenlearnact.org

Paving This Week

With paving season now fully underway, crews continue improving streets and advancing roadway projects across Louisville Metro.

Louisville Metro repaves streets each year to preserve roadway conditions, extend the life of existing pavement, and provide safer, smoother travel for everyone. Regular paving helps prevent more costly repairs in the future and protects the city’s infrastructure investment.

To see which streets are currently scheduled for paving, visit the "Paving" page at louisvilleky.gov. Please note that all listed projects are weather permitting and subject to change.
