Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday! I hope you had a great week and, if you have kids, have settled into your full back-to-school routine!

At last night's council meeting, the primary piece of legislation on the agenda was our data center moratorium. As a reminder, there are two pieces of legislation on this issue that have been proposed/are in process.

The primary piece (which I introduced last year) asked the Planning Commission to review the Land Development Code as it relates to data center regulations. This process has been slower than I would have hoped, but we are finally nearing the end! The current recommendations from Planning staff, which I mentioned in my July 31 newsletter, are quite stringent and would ban hyperscale data centers altogether. The last of four public hearings was earlier this week, so the next step is for the Planning Commission to consider all the information and make a formal recommendation on Land Development Code changes to the Metro Council.

The other component was a moratorium to keep any new data centers from being developed while city planners and the Planning Commission did their work. We passed the moratorium last night, and I am glad we did as a new data center was proposed just this week. The moratorium will keep this development (and any like it) from moving forward for the next six months or until we pass new regulations, whichever comes first.

There was some discussion on extending the moratorium for a full year, a decision I oppose for now. Next month will be one year since I introduced the request for land use reform on data centers. While I want us to be thoughtful about our decision, I don’t think it should take us another year to pass these rules. That said, I was happy to vote for the moratorium and look forward to implementing permanent guidelines where data centers are concerned.

This is one of the most polarizing and consequential issues of the day, so I encourage everyone to participate in the process by attending any Planning Commission meetings, sending in your comments, or speaking at a Metro Council meeting.

As always, I hope you have a great weekend. If you need anything or my office can be of service, don’t hesitate to call.

Mayor Greenberg

My next meeting with constituents will be this coming Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the large meeting room of the Northeast Regional Library. Mayor Craig Greenberg will be our guest that evening. He plans to give an update on what's happening around Louisville and take questions from those in attendance. It's a great opportunity to share any thoughts or concerns you have, so I hope you'll be able to join us. See you Tuesday night!

KY 22 Highway Safety Improvement Project

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is evaluating a project that could lead to an improved experience for both drivers and pedestrians along Brownsboro Road (KY 22) between Hurstbourne Parkway and the Gene Snyder Interchange. Items under consideration include:

  • New asphalt surface and pavement markings within project limits
  • Adding a third driving lane between Hurstbourne Parkway and the I-265 southbound on-ramp
  • Construction of an additional left turn lane from KY 22 westbound to I-265 southbound
  • Safety improvements at the Simcoe Lane intersection
  • Construction of pedestrian facilities and sidewalks

If no delays occur, KYTC could begin construction on the project as early as next summer. You can learn more and keep up with future updates by visiting the project web page here.

Reimagined Belvedere

Belvedere

Earlier this week, Mayor Greenberg and the Belvedere project team shared new renderings of the reimagined Belvedere. Based on comments from almost 1,500 residents, the new design includes a multi-use path from Main Street to the river, a pavilion, a play space for children, lots of new trees, and a safe and accessible connection down to the wharf.

A free community event will be held this Sunday from 2-6 p.m. for people to see the design in person, meet the project team, and share feedback. There will also be food, live music, and hands-on activities from the Louisville Zoo, Kentucky Science Center, Kentucky Center for the Arts, and others. For more details on the project or Sunday's event, click here.

Jefferson Co. Sheriff's Office Traffic Stops

Sheriff

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office (JCSO) recently shared data regarding the 1,951 traffic stops made by its deputies from April through July. About 1,400 of those stops led to a citation being issued (mostly for speeding), while 553 stops ended in a courtesy notice which is a written warning that carries no fine. In our district, there were 27 total stops made with 16 citations issued. This was about 1% of all JCSO citations countywide, ranking our district 21 of 26 by volume. I'll continue to share this data as we get it. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Lock, Take, Hide

LMPD

The Louisville Metro Police Department has seen a recent increase in vehicle thefts and break-ins across the city. Officers are working overtime to catch those responsible and have recently arrested several individuals suspected of being involved. Thank you to the officers and detectives from the 8th Division (and others) doing this work!

We have a role to play in limiting these crimes as well. Please remember to lock your car, take your keys and firearms with you, and hide your belongings. If you see anything suspicious, call 574-7111. Thank you for doing your part!
