Weekend closure scheduled for I-264 East to support paving operations; overnight I-71 ramp closures planned for bridge work
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Aug. 11, 2026) – As work continues to progress on the $130 million widening and improvement project of Interstate 264 (Watterson Expressway) and U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) in Louisville, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of the upcoming weekend closure of I-264 East and an updated schedule for the overnight ramp closures on I-71.
Beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, through 6 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 17, I-264 East will be closed at the I-64/I-264 split at mile marker 18 to mile marker 22 (near U.S.42/Brownsboro Road). Traffic will still be able to enter I-264 East from U.S. 42 to reach I-71 North and South. Motorists should plan to detour by taking I-64 East to I-265 North to I-71 South to continue on I-71 South or I-264 West to reach destinations within the closure area.
The weekend closure of I-264 East is to allow contract crews to complete asphalt paving operations necessary for upcoming traffic shifts. As work progresses, traffic will be moved from the outside lanes to the inside lanes following the weekend closure. Additionally, overnight ramp closures on I-71 to allow contract crews to place girders on the I-71 South ramp bridge over the Watterson Expressway (I-264) interchange ramps have been rescheduled.
The following traffic restrictions will be in place nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 27, and Friday, Aug. 28:
- The I-264 East ramp to I-71 South will be closed (Exit 23B) – motorists should take I-71 North to I-265 North to reach I-71 South.
The following traffic restrictions will be in place nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. beginning Monday, Aug. 31, through Wednesday, Sept. 2:
- The I-264 East ramp to I-71 South will be closed (Exit 23B) – motorists should take I-71 North to I-265 North to reach I-71 South.
- The I-71 South ramp to I-264 West will be closed (Exit 5) – motorists should continue on I-71 South to Zorn Avenue at Exit 2 to I-71 North to reach I-264 West.
- I-71 North will be closed at mile point 4.9 – motorists will be able to continue to I-264 West at Exit 5 and should detour to either U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) at Exit 22 or KY 1447 (Westport Road) at Exit 21 to connect with I-264 East to proceed on to I-71 North.
The I-71 North ramp to I-264 West will remain open at Exit 5. The I-264 East ramp to I-71 North will also remain open (Exit 23A).
The interstate project is expected to be completed by the Fall of 2027. The work is being carried out by Cleary Construction Inc. of Monroe County, Kentucky. More details, including project timelines and traffic impacts, will be shared online as work progresses. Motorists are encouraged to sign up for email and text alerts regarding weekly traffic impacts pertaining to the project.
The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur. For the latest traffic and travel updates across the Commonwealth of Kentucky, visit goky.ky.gov. Information specific to District 5 counties is also available on Facebook and X.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Aug. 13, 2026) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of an upcoming lane closure on Interstate 71 North on Monday, Aug. 17, in Oldham County.
The right lane of I-71 North from mile marker 18 (near KY 393) to mile marker 22 (near KY 53) will be closed from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 17. The lane closure is necessary for KYTC crews to perform routine maintenance of the interstate. Motorists should heed signage and use caution when traveling through the work zone.
Tonight the Metro Council voted in favor of a six-month moratorium on permits allowing for zoning changes or any new construction of large-scale data centers within Louisville Metro. The Ordinance (O-135-26) gives Metro the time to conclude our work on land development code regulations for the review of zoning changes related to the construction of large-scale data centers. The public meetings for these policies have just concluded and planning staff will work with members of the planning commission to complete their final recommendations for new regulations. Once these have been passed by the commission, the Metro Council will have the opportunity to review them, and take a final vote.
Should any delays occur that would prevent action prior to the conclusion of the six-month moratorium, the Metro Council would have the ability to extend the moratorium. This fact helps to assure people that nothing will be able to slip through the cracks. All new large-scale data centers will be subject to these new regulations that take into consideration extensive public input.
We do plan on ensuring that the regulations address the serious concerns of our constituents. They include protections for air and water quality, and not transferring energy or water use costs to residential customers.
Data Centers aren’t new to our region, but the construction of large-scale data centers are. I am hopeful that our work over the past year, as well as the work undertaken by the planning commission, will help us chart a long-term plan for addressing these types of proposals.
I-65 has partially reopened.
It’s important to remember I-65 will remain a construction zone, open to two lanes of traffic in each direction with a reduced speed limit of 40 mph for much of the corridor from the Watterson (I-264) to downtown (Jefferson Street). There will be a section of southbound I-65 south of the Hill/CSX/Burnett bridge that will be 45 mph. We will continue to urge through traffic to use the signed detour and swing to the west with I-264 (Georgia Davis Powers Expressway) to avoid construction. And we will continue to urge drivers to use mapping apps for the best routes at their time of travel.
Work on these three critical bridges will continue through March 2027. The approach is being finalized to rehabilitate or replace six additional bridges. The end date for the project will be known when that approach is finalized.

The Louisville Metro Police Department is asking residents to take a few simple steps to help prevent vehicle thefts and break-ins as the city continues to see an increase in these crimes.
Remember: Lock, Take, Hide.
-
Lock your car every time you leave it unattended.
-
Take your keys and firearms with you. Never leave them inside your vehicle.
-
Hide your belongings or remove valuables from plain sight.
These simple precautions can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim of theft.
LMPD is actively working to address these crimes and recently arrested several individuals connected to vehicle break-ins as part of an ongoing effort to target offenders. However, prevention and public awareness remain important tools in keeping our neighborhoods safe.
If you observe suspicious activity, please contact LMPD's non-emergency line at (502) 574-7111.
