New Kentucky school bus stop law is now in effect
School is back in session, and there's an important change every driver should know. Kentucky's updated school bus stop law, created through House Bill 7, expands when drivers must stop for a school bus with its stop arm extended and red lights flashing.
What changed?
Drivers must now stop in all lanes and in both directions, including on:
- Four-lane roads with a center turn lane
- Highways that are not divided by a physical barrier or unpaved median
When don't you have to stop?
The only exception is when you're traveling in the opposite direction on a roadway with four or more lanes that is separated by an elevated barrier or an unpaved median.
Know before you go
Passing a stopped school bus is dangerous and illegal. Drivers who fail to stop can face a $300 fine on the first offence and a $500 fine for each additional offense within three years.
Slowing down and stopping for school buses helps protect children as they get on and off the bus. A few extra seconds can make all the difference.
These regulations are intended to guide how data centers are developed in Louisville while helping protect residents, existing businesses, infrastructure, and utility customers.
Residents are invited to attend a series of upcoming public hearings to learn more about the proposed regulations and provide public comment. Residents may provide public comment at one hearing during the series. Each speaker will have up to three minutes.

Louisville Metro Solid Waste Management will be hosting various free recycling and large item disposal events throughout 2026. All events are from 10:00am to 2:00pm on select Saturdays:

Isabelle Ballard is a Kentucky-based painter whose work uses animals and natural settings to explore emotion, identity and memory. Influenced by her time in Costa Rica, her paintings invite viewers to see the natural world as a reflection of human experience. Jefferson County residents can apply for utility assistance through the Louisville Metro Office of Social Services |
Enrollment for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Summer Subsidy to help Kentucky households offset summer cooling costs is now open. It will run through September 11th or until designated funds are depleted. Funds are approved on a first-come, first-serve basis.
To apply, Jefferson County residents may schedule an appointment through the automated appointment system. Appointments may be scheduled by phone at (502) 991-8391 or online at the LIHEAP Appointment Scheduler.
The Summer Subsidy does not require a disconnect notice or past due bill. The benefit can be applied as credit on your account. Previous LIHEAP assistance does not affect a household's eligibility.

These are geared toward, but not exclusively for, residents who might otherwise not be able to afford to attend a Bats game. The offer is extended to both individuals and mentoring organizations, social service agencies, underprivileged kids’ groups, etc.

- Free admission for a reserved seat at Louisville Slugger Field
- A voucher good for one free hot dog, and one free small soft drink
Forms will be monitored and will close once each district has reached their maximum capacity of 300 tickets – Groups and individuals are advised to request their tickets in advance to ensure availability!
