Louisville Metro Warns Public of Scam Emails Targeting Applicants

Louisville Metro Government’s Office of Planning is warning residents and applicants about fraudulent emails claiming to be from Metro Government that request payment for “application approval fees.” These emails are not legitimate and should be ignored.

Louisville Metro Government will not request payment by email, wire transfer, or third-party payment platforms. All application fees are due at the time of submittal through official channels only. Legitimate application-related communications come directly from Louisville Metro staff by phone or from a @louisvilleky.gov email address.

Example of Scam Email (NOT legitimate)

Dear (name),
I am writing to inform you that the application you submitted for (application type) has been reviewed by our staff.
To complete the process and finalize the approval of your application, we kindly ask that you settle the attached invoice for the application approval fee.

Please follow the steps below:
Next Steps:
• Reply to this email to request settlement advice or further instructions regarding the payment.
• Settle the issued wire instructions by following the payment details provided in the attached invoice.
• Return the wire transfer receipt to this email for payment confirmation.
Thank you for your cooperation.

How to Protect Yourself

• Do not click links or open attachments from unknown or suspicious senders.
• Verify the sender’s email address—official Metro emails end in @louisvilleky.gov.
• Do not reply to or send payment in response to these messages.
• Report suspicious emails to planningcustomerservice@louisvilleky.gov or to your assigned case manager.
• If you are unsure, call the Office of Planning directly at (502) 574‑6230.

Community Day at the Food Literacy Project - July 25th

Join the Food Literacy Project for a Community Day at their urban farm in Okolona! Don't Get Bit: Protect Yourself and Your Community from Mosquitoes

This week the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness announced that mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus were found in monitoring traps in the Wyandotte/Oakdale neighborhoods near Churchill Downs. To help protect the community and reduce mosquitoes, mosquito fogging was scheduled for those neighborhoods.

How to protect yourself from mosquito bites

• Use insect repellent when you are outdoors. Products with DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus work well when used as directed.
• When you can, wear long sleeves, long pants, and socks. You can also use repellents on clothing for added protection.
• Try to take extra care at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active.

How to reduce mosquitoes around your home

•  Empty standing water regularly from items like buckets, flowerpots, gutters, and birdbaths.
•  Change water in pet dishes often.
•  Make sure window and door screens are in good repair to keep mosquitoes outside.

There have been no confirmed human cases of West Nile virus in Jefferson County this year. Most people who are infected with West Nile virus do not feel sick. Some people may have mild symptoms, such as fever or body aches. Serious illness is rare, affecting less than one percent of people. Older adults and people with certain health conditions may be at higher risk for more serious illness.

New School Bus Stop Law is Now in Effect - Learn What Changed

New Kentucky school bus stop law is now in effect

School is almost back in session, and there's an important change every driver should know. Kentucky's updated school bus stop law, created through House Bill 7, expands when drivers must stop for a school bus with its stop arm extended and red lights flashing.

What changed?

Drivers must now stop in all lanes and in both directions, including on:

• Four-lane roads with a center turn lane

• Highways that are not divided by a physical barrier or unpaved median

When don't you have to stop?

The only exception is when you're traveling in the opposite direction on a roadway with four or more lanes that is separated by an elevated barrier or an unpaved median.

Know before you go!

Passing a stopped school bus is dangerous and illegal. Drivers who fail to stop can face:

• $300 fine for a first offense
• $500 fine for each additional offense within three years

Slowing down and stopping for school buses helps protect children as they get on and off the bus. A few extra seconds can make all the difference.
