Ways to Cool Down at Metro Parks

Beat the heat in Louisville by visiting city cooling centers, neighborhood splash pads or public pools. Louisville Parks and Recreation operates over 30 free splash pads, which are open from dawn to dusk. You can also visit air-conditioned libraries and community centers. For information about these options, click here.

Splash Pads & Water Parks

Locations: Find water features at parks like Algonquin, Baxter Square, Central Park, and Bingham Park.
Details: These free spray grounds operate from dawn to dusk.

Public Pools

Locations: Swim at Algonquin (1614 Cypress St), Camp Taylor (1310 Belmar Drive), Sun Valley (10405 Lower River Road), and Fairdale (Nalley Lane).
Hours: Pools are open six days a week from 12 to 5 PM. Check the Louisville Parks and Recreation website for your local pool's specific closed day.

Almost Famous/This is Spinal Tap Double Feature - July 11th

It's a Double Feature Hollywood Classics Under the Stars at Iroquois Amphitheater, July 11th. Doors open at 7:30 PM and the movie starts at 8:45 PM, at 1080 Amphitheater Road.

Almost Famous (2000) is a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age film written and directed by Cameron Crowe, based on his own experiences as a teenage rock journalist in the 1970s. It follows 15-year-old William Miller, who gets an assignment from Rolling Stone magazine to tour with an up-and-coming band, Stillwater.

This Is Spinal Tap (1984) is a seminal “mockumentary” directed by Rob Reiner that satirizes the excesses of 1970s/80s heavy metal bands. It follows the fictional, fading British band Spinal Tap on a disastrous U.S. tour, characterized by absurd creative tensions, dwindling crowds, technical mishaps, and ill-fated drummers.

This FREE event is for ALL AGES, but please note both films are rated R.

South Points Buy Local Fair - July 12th

Find diversity and adventure in South Louisville! The Louisville Independent Business Alliance (LIBA) will host the South Points Buy Local Fair on Sunday, July 12th from 12 - 4 PM near the Iroquois Amphitheater. The Fair offers shopping with local, independent South Louisville businesses along with music, libations, food, a kids’ area, silent auction and more. Admission and parking are free.

St. Rita Picnic - July 17th & 18th

St. Rita Summer Picnic is July 17th from 6 - 11 PM and 18th from 4 - 11 PM at 8709 Preston Highway. There will be kids games, inflatables, gaming booths, showdown poker, pull tabs, a DJ on Friday, live music and the famous chicken dinner on Saturday!

FCHUM Collecting Items for Backpack Giveaway - Deadline July 25th

Fern Creek Highview United Ministries Inc. is collecting items for backpacks for the upcoming school year. You may drop off supplies at 9300 Beulah Church Road, Monday - Friday 9 AM - 3 PM. Volunteers are also needed to help with this giveaway event. The last day to donate is July 25th. Items needed include pencils, glues sticks, colored pencils, notebooks and backpacks (no wheels.)

AT&T to do Splice Work on Cooper Chapel Road

AT&T will access poles, manholes, and handholes along Cooper Chapel Rd for splice work. The work will take place sometime between July 16 and August 16. The impact on traffic will be minimal.

Neighborhood Housing Summary

The Louisville Metro Office of Planning today released proposed Neighborhood Housing regulations following several years of collaboration with residents and community leaders. The proposed changes to the Land Development Code (LDC) would allow for more housing choices while supporting homeownership. The commission’s goal when drafting the regulations was to increase housing inventory to make housing more affordable while taking into account existing infrastructure.

The proposed regulations would allow for a wider range of housing types in the urban core and within walking distance of commercial corridors. These housing options would include duplexes, cottage courts, and townhomes. Referred to as Neighborhood Housing, these homes offer housing opportunities that provide an alternative to single-family homes and large apartment buildings. These options would be permitted in locations that already have access to infrastructure such as sidewalks and sewer service, particularly within the urban core and near commercial corridors.

Under the proposed regulations, Neighborhood Housing could be developed in:

Traditional Neighborhood Form Districts (old City of Louisville limits).
Areas within one-quarter mile of most commercial corridors such as Dixie Highway, Bardstown Road, Preston Highway and Shelbyville Road.
Proposed residential developments on more than three acres.

In Traditional Neighborhood areas, where duplexes, fourplexes and other Neighborhood Housing types already exist, property owners would be able to build small, multi-unit residences without requiring a change in zoning, if the project meets a strict set of design standards.

In suburban areas, larger undeveloped sites of three acres or more could include a mix of single-family homes and Neighborhood Housing types, with required infrastructure such as sidewalks and off-street parking. In addition, Neighborhood Housing would also be permitted on infill lots that are within ¼ mile of a commercial corridor, making it easier for residents to live within a 10-minute walk of local businesses and services.

To ensure compatibility with surrounding neighborhoods, the regulations would:

Prohibit front-yard parking.
Require front-facing entrances and windows.
Require sidewalks where none currently exist
Limit Neighborhood Housing to no more than 50% of lots on a block face.
Limit identical building types to no more than three adjacent structures.
Prohibit the demolition of existing single-family homes for Neighborhood Housing development unless it has received an emergency demolition order or received approval from the Planning Commission at a public hearing.

Additional proposed changes include:

Expanding home-ownership opportunities by reducing minimum lot-size requirements for new single-family homes.
Measuring building height by stories rather than feet to provide greater flexibility for modern housing design.
Eliminating unnecessary regulatory barriers that limit infill housing construction on commercially zoned land.
Simplifying approval processes for housing developments that already meet the Land Development Code standards.
Establishing development standards for the Urban Center Neighborhood Form District to encourage investment and housing growth in areas surrounding Downtown Louisville.

The goal of this club is to read short stories and talk about them in Spanish, while enjoying a cup of coffee or tea. Baby Storytime - Mondays

Play Reading Series - July 19th - Children of the Moon

The Main Off-Broadway Play Reading Series returns for a second season, touring to several different branches! This series brings to life classic plays that have recently entered the public domain. Each reading showcases a different work read aloud by talented local actors. Children of the Moon, by Martin Flavin

Upbeat Louisville Presents Rhythm Kids - July 23rd

Join Upbeat Louisville for 45 minutes of jamming fun. The Rhythm Kids program explores music, movement and drumming. They will undertake traditional drumming patterns, create animals movements and sing and dance to music from around the world. Through music, they'll help kids new ways to connect mind, body and voice and play active musical games that are enriching and totally fun! For children 4-8, July 23rd at 2 PM.
