Councilman Hudson joined members of the Metro Council’s Minority Caucus at a press conference this week to outline progress on policy goals set within their “Safer Louisville” plan.
Members of the Metro Council’s Minority Caucus held a press conference today to outline progress on the policy goals within their “Safer Louisville” plan. Caucus members provided updates on all eighteen proposals and announced that five goals have now been completed, including four finished in the past four months.
Completed Goals
-
Anti‑Human Trafficking Ordinance — Councilman Hudson spoke on the implementation of the Anti‑Human Trafficking Ordinance, which passed last year. Additional funding has since been allocated to support enforcement, and LMPD has made multiple arrests at several Louisville locations as enforcement efforts have expanded.
-
Streetlight Safety Pilot Program — Sixteen solar lights will be installed in six locations identified by LMPD as higher‑crime areas in South and Southwest Louisville. Crime and safety data will be evaluated before and after installation to determine effectiveness.
-
First Responders Training Facility — Land has been acquired, and $10 million in state and local funds has been committed toward construction of a new training and driving track for Metro first responders. Additional funding will be required, but work is expected to begin soon in Southwest Jefferson County.
-
Crackdown on Illegally Placed Collection Bins — Metro Council updated ordinances to strengthen enforcement. Over the past four months, more than 60 illegally placed bins have been removed, and 15 have been impounded after failing to be retrieved by owners.
-
State Law Changes — State Representative Chris Lewis provided updates on legislation aimed at improving Metro’s ability to address streetside solicitation and reforming the use of 202A forms for individuals experiencing mental‑health crises.

Louisville Metro Solid Waste Management will be hosting various free recycling and large item disposal events throughout 2026. All events are from 10:00am to 2:00pm on select Saturdays:
2026 Pop-Up Drop-Off Schedule:
- June 13: Doss High School (tentative), 7601 St. Andrews Church Rd.
- July 18: Metro Fleet Services, 3515 Newburg Rd
- August 15: Fern Creek Elementary/High School, 8815 Ferndale Rd
- September 19: Sun Valley Park/Ashby Lane Baptist, 10401 Lower River Rd/6617 Ashby Ln
- October 17: Metro Fleet Services, 3515 Newburg Rd
- November 21: UofL Shelby Campus, 440 N Whittington Pkwy
Pop-Up Drop-Off comes to Doss High School - featuring bulky plastic recycling!
We'll be recycling the following large plastic items:
- Old or broken laundry baskets
- Busted storage totes and bins
- Leaky buckets
- Broken large flowerpots
- Unusable plastic shelving and drawer units
These items don’t belong in curbside recycling and typically end up in the landfill — but at this event, by collecting them separately, they'll be able to be recycled.
In addition to bulky plastics, the Pop-Up Drop-Off will continue accepting a variety of other materials, most of which are diverted from the landfill through recycling, reuse, or proper disposal. This makes the event a convenient, one-stop opportunity to clear out hard-to-dispose items while supporting Louisville Metro’s sustainability goals.
Residents can drop off a variety of items, including large household items, up to three electronic devices, scrap metal, bundled yard waste, up to four tires, and household recyclables. Additional services include prescription medication collection by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, on-site document shredding by a vendor, and gently used shoe donations to WaterStep.
New this year, residents can also bring gently used textiles and household items, which will be donated to Goodwill Kentucky.
Residents are encouraged to review accepted and non-accepted items before attending and take advantage of this free service.
