Flash Flood Safety: Be Prepared and Stay Informed

Flash Flood Safety: Be Prepared and Stay Informed

Recent flash flooding events across Louisville Metro have served as an important reminder that severe weather can create dangerous conditions quickly, especially on our roadways.

When heavy rain occurs, streets, viaducts, and low-lying areas can flood with little warning. Floodwaters may appear shallow, but they can be deeper and moving faster than they look.

Remember: Turn Around, Don't Drown

Most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles. It only takes a small amount of moving water to create dangerous conditions:

  • Just 6 inches of fast-moving water can knock over an adult.
  • Less than 2 feet of water can carry away a vehicle.
  • Floodwaters can hide damaged pavement, debris, or washed-out roads.

If you encounter water covering a roadway, do not attempt to drive through it. Turn around and find an alternate route.

Respect road closure barricades

When flooding occurs, Louisville Metro Public Works crews work around the clock to monitor conditions and close roads when necessary.

Barricades are placed to protect the public from unsafe conditions. Never move or drive around a barricade. Doing so puts you, your passengers, first responders, and other motorists at risk.

Stay informed

Before and during severe weather, residents are encouraged to stay informed through multiple sources:

Road closures and safety updates are also shared on Louisville Metro Public Works social media channels (FacebookInstagramX) during severe weather events.

By staying informed and following these simple safety tips, we can all help keep our community safe during flooding events.

Check Pool Inspection Data Before You Dive In

Check Pool Inspection Data Before You Dive In

Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness' Environmental Health Administrator Ciara Warren tests the pool's water quality at a local hotel.

Before going to the pool or your favorite local water park this summer, be sure to check out water safety information on our Louisville Metro open data portal. Our team inspects more than 500 pools and spas located in city and state parks, condos, apartments, amusement parks, recreation venues, and private clubs to protect our residents and visitors.

Pools are inspected twice annually, and inspections include verifying certified lifeguards are on duty, all equipment is working properly to disinfect and filter the water, water quality is in acceptable limits, and that all safety equipment is on deck and in proper working order.

Illness outbreaks associated with recreational water are the result of exposure to chemicals or infectious pathogens such as viruses and bacteria. The most common contaminant in pools is Cryptosporidium, which can cause acute gastrointestinal illness including stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. Cryptosporidium has a high tolerance to chlorine, which allows the parasite to survive for long periods of time in chlorinated drinking and swimming water.

Water samples are collected weekly for bacteria testing and laboratory services are provided by the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness.

You can access this inspection data at data.louisvilleky.gov. Watch our videos on pool safety on our YouTube channel.

Data Center Regulations Community Feedback

Data Center Regulations Community Feedback

📢 Louisville Metro Office of Planning has released draft regulations for public review regarding data centers.

The draft regulations would:

✅ Ban hyperscale data centers in Louisville & limit future proposals to under 500,000 square feet

✅ Require proposed developments to be located in industrial areas

✅ Protect neighborhoods, schools, and daycare centers through separation requirements

✅ Require developers—not taxpayers—to pay for infrastructure upgrades

✅ Prevent utility costs from being shifted to existing ratepayers

✅ Establish noise standards and buffering requirements for generators and other equipment

✅ Require prevailing wages during construction

These draft regulations were shaped by months of research and feedback from thousands of Louisville residents.

The public review period is now open for 30 days. Residents are encouraged to review the proposal and submit comments before public hearings begin.

Artificial intelligence is not just changing the future of technology. It is changing the future of business, work, and economic competitiveness — including here in Kentucky.

As companies, entrepreneurs, and communities navigate a rapidly evolving global economy, the race for AI leadership between the United States and China raises urgent questions: Who will shape the next era of innovation? What industries will be transformed first? And how can cities like Louisville stay competitive as technology reshapes the way we work, build, and grow?

Join internationally recognized journalist, author, and global technology expert Rebecca Fannin for The AI Race: America, China, and the Future of Innovation, a timely conversation on artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, and global competition. Drawing on decades of experience covering emerging technology markets and insights from her book The New Tech Titans of China, Fannin will examine the rise of China’s technology sector, America’s innovation strengths, and what the AI revolution means for businesses and communities across the United States.

This program will be moderated by Lisa Benson, President and Publisher of Louisville Business First, bringing a local business perspective to a global conversation. Together, Fannin and Benson will explore how international technology trends connect to the challenges and opportunities facing Kentucky’s workforce, entrepreneurs, and business leaders.

Following moderated remarks, audience members will have the opportunity to participate in an open Q&A.

Whether you are interested in business, technology, international affairs, entrepreneurship, or the future of work, this conversation offers a valuable opportunity to better understand how the global AI race may shape the future close to home.

Missed Waste Collection: What Residents Need to Know

Missed Waste Collection: What Residents Need to Know2

We understand how frustrating it can be to miss your regular garbage, recycling, or yard waste pickup. To help ensure smooth collection — and to make sure any true misses are handled quickly — please keep the following guidelines in mind.

The most important rule: Be ready by 6 a.m.

All waste must be set out no later than 6 a.m. on your collection day.

Even if your route is usually serviced later in the day, please do not rely on past timing. Collection schedules can change from week to week due to:

  • Different drivers running routes
  • Traffic, weather, or equipment issues
  • Operational adjustments for efficiency

Setting your waste out late — even by a small amount of time — can result in it not being collected.

Please wait until after 6 p.m. to report a miss

Collection crews often work into the evening to complete routes.

👉 Do not report a missed collection until after 6 p.m. on your collection day.
Your material may still be collected later in the day.

Late set-outs will not be collected

If your waste was not out before 6 a.m., crews will not return to collect it later in the day. In these cases:

  • Please do not report the stop as missed
  • Our routing technology helps verify service times and locations, so accuracy matters

Think it was truly missed?

If your waste was out on time and still not collected after 6 p.m., we want to hear from you.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Report the issue through Metro311 (online is the fastest option)
  2. Go to the Metro311 webpage
  3. Select “Trash Complaints & Violations”
  4. Choose “Missed Waste Services”

Once you’ve reported a missed collection:

  • Leave your cart out, or
  • Set it back out by 6 a.m. the next day

👉 Important: If carts are brought in and then set back out late the following day, they can be missed again.

Helpful tips to avoid missed pickups

  • ✅ Set your waste out the night before collection day
  • ✅ Make sure carts are placed correctly and are accessible
  • ✅ Double-check your schedule, especially after holidays
  • ✅ When in doubt, put it out the evening before

By following these steps, you can help ensure reliable service and quick resolution if something does go wrong. Thank you for helping keep our community clean and running smoothly!
