June 8 - The American Revolution : A FREE Screening Event

The American Revolution

Monday, June 8
5:00pm - 8:00pm
Kentucky Center for Preforming Arts
501 W. Main St

Join KET and the America250KY Louisville Committee for a free public event at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts as we mark the nation’s approaching 250th anniversary with an evening of history, reflection and civic connection.

The program features a special highlight screening from The American Revolution, a six-part, twelve-hour documentary series by Ken Burns. The series explores how thirteen British colonies rose in rebellion, secured independence, and established a new form of government that reshaped the continent and inspired democratic movements around the world.

Before the screening, guests are invited to explore engaging exhibits from historic and community partners during a showcase in the Kentucky Center’s main lobby from 5 to 6 pm.

The selected documentary excerpts focus on “The Spirit of Service,” tracing volunteerism, civic participation and public leadership from the nation’s founding to the present day. Following the screening, KET’s Renee Shaw will moderate a thoughtful panel discussion connecting the spirit of service and civic education in 1776 with its meaning and impact in 2026.

Confirmed Panelists:

  • Dr. Thomas Mackey, Historian, University of Louisville (Retired)
  • Dr. Gary Gregg. Political Scientist and McConnell Center Director, University of Louisville
  • The Honorable Michael Adams, Kentucky Secretary of State
  • The Honorable Jerry Abramson
  • Maggie Harlow, Executive Director, Jack Harlow Foundation
  • Daryle W. Unseld Jr., President, Boys and Girls Club of Kentuckiana

This special Louisville event is presented in partnership with the America250KY Louisville Committee and made possible with the support of community and historic partners.

This event is free, and advanced registration is encouraged. Click here to register.

June 13 - Pop Up Drop Off at Doss High School

Pop Up Doss HS

Louisville Metro Solid Waste Management will be hosting various free recycling and large item disposal events throughout 2026. All events are from 10:00am to 2:00pm on select Saturdays:

2026 Pop-Up Drop-Off Schedule:

  • June 13: Doss High School (tentative), 7601 St. Andrews Church Rd.
  • July 18: Metro Fleet Services, 3515 Newburg Rd
  • August 15: Fern Creek Elementary/High School, 8815 Ferndale Rd
  • September 19: Sun Valley Park/Ashby Lane Baptist, 10401 Lower River Rd/6617 Ashby Ln
  • October 17: Metro Fleet Services, 3515 Newburg Rd
  • November 21: UofL Shelby Campus, 440 N Whittington Pkwy

Pop-Up Drop-Off comes to Doss High School - featuring bulky plastic recycling!

We'll be recycling the following large plastic items:

  • Old or broken laundry baskets
  • Busted storage totes and bins
  • Leaky buckets
  • Broken large flowerpots
  • Unusable plastic shelving and drawer units

These items don’t belong in curbside recycling and typically end up in the landfill — but at this event, by collecting them separately, they'll be able to be recycled.

In addition to bulky plastics, the Pop-Up Drop-Off will continue accepting a variety of other materials, most of which are diverted from the landfill through recycling, reuse, or proper disposal. This makes the event a convenient, one-stop opportunity to clear out hard-to-dispose items while supporting Louisville Metro’s sustainability goals.

Residents can drop off a variety of items, including large household items, up to three electronic devices, scrap metal, bundled yard waste, up to four tires, and household recyclables. Additional services include prescription medication collection by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, on-site document shredding by a vendor, and gently used shoe donations to WaterStep.

New this year, residents can also bring gently used textiles and household items, which will be donated to Goodwill Kentucky.

Residents are encouraged to review accepted and non-accepted items before attending and take advantage of this free service.
