Greeting Neighbors,
The Mayor’s Budget Proposal
Last week, the Mayor shared his vision for this year’s budget. I share much of that vision, especially the focus on investing in our children and families. By making housing more affordable during these difficult times of rising prices and investing in our parks and libraries, we can enhance the quality of life for every Louisvillian. These investments do more than provide recreation – they improve public safety by giving our youth healthy places to explore and grow.
Beyond these city-wide goals, I remain fully committed to the District 21 priorities I have shared with you in earlier newsletters. I will be in meetings throughout May to review the details of every agency's presentation, advocating for our district's specific needs and ensuring your tax dollars are spent conscientiously. I look forward to reporting back to you on our progress. You can view the full proposed budget here: Approved Budgets by Fiscal Year | LouisvilleKY.gov
The Dignity Pledge
I am also proud to share that the Council gave unanimous support to the Dignity Pledge. This initiative is very close to my heart – I was honored to lead this effort from its start, working to bring my colleagues together to make this vision a reality. As I mentioned in my March 20th newsletter regarding my work with Braver Angels, this pledge acts as a beacon for collaboration.
It helps us set aside biases and engage in true dialogue to find the best solutions for our city. It is a commitment to put the people’s interests above personal ones, and it is just the beginning of our work toward a better way forward. You can read the full language of the pledge here.
I believe this spirit of partnership is best summarized by the timeless wisdom of President Franklin D. Roosevelt:
“Competition has been shown to be useful up to a certain point and no further, but cooperation, which is the thing we must strive for today, begins where competition leaves off.”
I wish you a safe and pleasant weekend – whether you are celebrating Derby or enjoying other activities.
Stay safe,
Betsy

 Metro Council AC Distribution
Last week, volunteers came together to load vehicles with portable air conditioning units to help low‑income residents stay safe and cool during the summer months.
|
The units were provided through a collaborative effort by Metro Council Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 15, and 21, highlighting strong cross‑district cooperation in addressing a critical community need.
Now in its third year, this annual initiative continues to expand its impact. This year, the program distributed nearly 200 portable A/C units to households most vulnerable to extreme heat.
Thank you to the volunteers and participating council districts whose teamwork helped make this effort possible and ensured our neighbors have the resources they need to stay safe and healthy this summer.
