Overnight Closures Planned at I‑65/I‑264 Interchange
Overnight ramp and lane closures are scheduled this week at the Interstate 65 and Interstate 264 (Watterson Expressway) interchange in Louisville. Contract crews will continue preparations for temporary ramp widening to help ease congestion ahead of the I‑65 closure planned for this summer as part of the I‑65 Central Corridor Project.
Overnight Traffic Impacts
Monday, April 20, and Tuesday, April 21 | 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.
- Ramp from northbound I‑65 to eastbound I‑264 closed
- Preston Highway ramp to eastbound I‑264 (near Durrett Lane) closed
Wednesday, April 22, and Thursday, April 23 | 7 p.m. – 6 a.m.
- Southbound I‑65 lane closure between westbound I‑264 (Exit 131B at milepoint 131.2) and the ramp to eastbound I‑264 (milepoint 130.3)
- Eastbound I‑264 lane closure at the ramp to southbound I‑65
- Westbound I‑264 lane shift at the ramp to southbound I‑65
No closures are scheduled April 24 through May 3 to accommodate Kentucky Derby events.
Drivers should remain alert, follow posted signage, and slow down in work zones. Navigation apps such as Waze account for closures and provide the most efficient route at the time of travel.
What to Expect This Summer
Approximately five miles of I‑65 will close between the Watterson Expressway (I‑264) and downtown Louisville (Jefferson Street) beginning early Monday, June 1, and is expected to reopen Saturday, Aug. 1.
During the closure, through traffic will be detoured to I‑264 (Georgia Davis Powers Expressway) on the west side of Louisville. The signed detour is the shortest available route, uses roadways with the most capacity, and is designed to minimize traffic impacts.
The full closure allows crews to quickly address three bridges in need of immediate improvements:
- I‑65 bridges over Kentucky Street/Brook Street
- Hill Street/CSX Railroad/Burnett Avenue
- Bradley Avenue near the fairgrounds
St. Catherine Street Ramp Closure
The ramp from southbound I‑65 to east St. Catherine Street (Exit 135) is expected to close on or after early Monday, May 4.
This ramp closure is necessary for work associated with replacing the I‑65 bridge over Kentucky and Brook streets. The ramp is expected to reopen later this year.

This month, Kentucky Women Infants and Children Supplemental Nutrition program (WIC) food packages will be updated to meet new USDA nutrition guidelines, bringing more choices and flexibility for WIC families.
“Families won’t see changes to their current benefits until their next issuance, so be sure to keep your next WIC appointment,” said Summer Scott, nutrition and lactation program manager for the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW). “At that visit, your nutritionist or nurse can help you switch to a new food package if you’d like. A new WIC approved food list will be available in your WIC Shopper App.”
What’s new
- More flexibility in product sizes, including whole grains and infant foods
- New food options, including canned fish for women and children
- More whole‑grain choices and cereals
- New package options, including:
- Substituting $3 in Cash Value Benefits for juice
- Choosing beans or peanut butter instead of eggs
- Receiving up to 2 quarts of yogurt instead of milk
What’s changing
- Juice reduced to 64 ounces
- Whole grains adjusted to 48 ounces for most women and 24 ounces for children
- Some food packages now include one less pound of cheese
- Some yogurts, breads, and cereals removed due to updated nutrition standards or availability
“Talk with your WIC nutritionist at your next visit to explore the new options and choose what works best for your family,” Scott added.
The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness operates four WIC clinics. Last year the program served about 23,000 pregnant or postpartum women and children up to age 5. Call 502-574-7975 for questions or visit our website.
“Participation in the WIC program helps families improve the quality of diets, reduces premature births and low birth weight, in increases breastfeeding rates,” said Connie Mendel, director of LMPHW and Chief Health Strategist. “Participation in WIC also increases access to prenatal care, immunizations and regular healthcare.”
More information on the USDA’s changes to WIC food packages can be found here.

East Market Street Bike Lane Improvements Underway
Work is underway to enhance the bike lane along East Market Street in NuLu, with overnight painting and striping that began Monday. Crews have already completed much of the bike track, adding bright green, high‑visibility reflective paint and durable tape to improve safety along the corridor.
Work will continue over the next few weeks, primarily overnight Sunday through Thursday, to minimize impacts on businesses, residents, and visitors.
These improvements build on the recently completed East Market Streetscape Project and reflect Louisville Metro’s continued commitment to safety and continuous improvement. Teams are actively incorporating community feedback and making targeted adjustments where needed.
Additional efforts ahead include enhanced bike‑lane street sweeping, lighting evaluations, coordinated signage, and exploring loading zone options to reduce traffic disruptions.
Thank you for your patience as we work to make Louisville’s streets safer and more accessible for all.

Yard waste: If it didn't grow, it doesn't go
Spring planting season means more yard work—and more chances for contamination in yard waste containers. One of the most common problems we see is plastic plant pots and trays placed in yard waste. While it may seem harmless, these items do not compost and can ruin an entire load of compost.
When plastic ends up in yard waste, it must be sorted out by hand or the compost becomes unusable. Even small pieces can contaminate the final product, turning what should be a renewable resource into landfill waste. That’s why it’s so important to remember our simple rule: If it didn’t grow, it doesn’t go.
What belongs in yard waste?
✅ Grass clippings
✅ Leaves
✅ Sticks and branches
✅ Plants and flowers that grew
What does NOT belong?
❌ Plastic plant pots and trays
❌ Plastic bags
❌ Landscape fabric or synthetic materials
Before you toss it in your yard waste container, take a second look. Removing plastic pots and disposing of them correctly helps protect our compost, supports healthier soil, and keeps our system working efficiently for everyone.
Thanks for doing your part to kNOw Waste and keep compost clean!
