Greetings Neighbors,
We’ve been incredibly busy at the office this past month. Between finalizing the sidewalk repair list and reviewing our three-year paving plan, we’re focused on ensuring the worst roads get prioritized for repair. We’re also drafting legislation to improve coordination between Public Works and utility companies. Case in point: just this week, I learned MSD is performing a sewer repair on 1st Street – on a section that was paved just yesterday. That simply shouldn't happen. Better coordination between Metro and our utilities will save taxpayer money and prevent neighborhoods from being dug up multiple times.
What I want to highlight today is our upcoming work for Huston Quin Park in Wilder Park. It’s a small neighborhood gem, less than two acres, featuring a basketball court, splash pad, and playground. We are utilizing paving funds to create a formal parking area where folks currently park on gravel, and we are considering adding soccer goals to the field. I am also working to find a way to install affordable, lasting solar lights to keep the area bright and safe.
I’m also excited to announce a new skate park on Florence Avenue, next to the Circle K. This site has been a problem area for years, struggling with frequent panhandling and drug use. By bringing it into the park system, we can better enforce the law. The park will close at 11:00 PM, allowing us to clear the area. Furthermore, city ordinances dictate that park property must be used for its intended purpose – meaning you can’t wash clothes at a splash pad, nor can you simply loiter or use drugs at a skate park. Just as importantly, this park will give kids and families a safe, positive space to play, be active, and connect with one another.
We will soon have a survey available for you to help us choose a name for the skate park and suggest other amenities for the area; please look for that information and signs at the site coming soon.
The improvements at Huston Quin and the addition of the skate park are, at their core, about public safety. When spaces are well-lit, cared for, and designed for appropriate play, they become less desirable for those up to no good and more appealing for families. Ultimately, most of our work for this community centers on safety: secure streets and sidewalks, leafy canopies that calm traffic, and trash-free neighborhoods that show residents care.
Does that sound like somewhere you want to live? I am committed to continuing the work of improving our district, and I want to thank you, my neighbors, for allowing me the opportunity to serve and for helping me in this public service. Together, we can create a community where we truly know and take care of one another.
Sincerely, Betsy
