JCSO Senior Scam Awareness

They Sound Official. They Feel Real. They’re a Scam — And We’re Calling Them Out.

The voice is calm. Confident. Convincing.

“Lieutenant David James.”

It sounds real. It feels urgent. And that’s exactly how the scam works.

In truth, David James is the Sheriff — not a lieutenant — and the call was a calculated attempt to deceive a local resident. It’s a reminder that today’s scammers are more polished, more personal and more dangerous than ever.

To fight back, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office partnered with CenterWell Senior Primary Care to expose these tactics and empower seniors with the tools to stay protected.  On Tuesday, April 7th, officials hosted a press conference and a Senior Scam Prevention Lunch & Learn at CenterWell.  During the event, investigators broke down the fake “Lt. David James” call and shared real-world examples of how scammers use urgency, authority and fear to manipulate victims.

Attendees learned how to spot red flags, protect their personal information and take action if targeted — all while connecting with law enforcement and community partners.

Bottom line: If it sounds official and feels urgent, pause — it could be a scam.

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and this year’s message is clear:

Put the Phone Away or Pay.

Distracted driving remains one of the most preventable dangers on our roadways. In 2023 alone, 3,275 lives were lost nationwide due to distraction-related crashes. Even a quick glance at your phone can take your eyes, hands, and attention off the road long enough to cause serious consequences.

In Louisville, this message is especially important as our Public Works crews work in and around traffic every day. Staying focused behind the wheel helps protect not only yourself, but also the people working to maintain and improve our streets.

We encourage everyone to take simple steps to drive distraction-free:

  • Put your phone away before you start driving.
  • If you must text or respond, pull over to a safe location and park first.
  • Remember that distracted driving includes texting, social media, and any activity that takes your attention off the road.
  • Use “Do Not Disturb,” silence notifications, or place your phone out of reach.
  • Ask a passenger to be the “designated texter” if needed.
  • Stay alert in work zones and around crews working near roadways.
  • Speak up if you see unsafe behavior.

Distracted driving isn’t just about awareness — it’s about accountability. Choosing to stay focused can prevent crashes, protect lives, and keep our roads safer for everyone.

Take the pledge to make every trip a distraction-free trip.

A message from Fern Creek Highview United Ministries:

Our major fundraising event of the year, Trivia Night, is set for Saturday, May 16We would greatly appreciate your consideration of a donation for our auction to help us with our fundraising efforts to support our Adult Day Care Health Center and the Individual & Family Assistance Center. We hope we can count on your support again this year.  It is generous people like you that make this event, our major fundraiser of the year, a success.

As you may know, Fern Creek/Highview United Ministries (FC/HUM), supported in part by twenty-two churches representing eleven denominations, is a not-for-profit (501C3) charitable organization (Federal ID #61-1148234) that seeks to meet the needs of people in our community.  Community support last year helped us provide:

     * Over 23,000 hours of service to frail older adults at our Adult Day Center

*Assisted over 7,500 families through our Individual & Family Assistance Center: which includes Holiday food baskets for families and Christmas gifts for children

     * Provided over $240,000 in housing and utilities assistance in 2025

     * All of our programs stretch limited resources to meet the needs of our community.

Again, our major fundraising event is the Trivia Night scheduled for Saturday, May 16.  Each year we are in need of items to include in our auction, and monetary support in the form of sponsorships.  Sponsorship information is provided below.  Your gift, along with those of other individuals and businesses will go a long way in helping us in our mission of serving people in need living in our community.

We are currently collecting both donations and sponsorships.  We hope to have all donations by April 1st. P.S.  If possible, could you include us each year for a donation from your company to help our fundraising efforts?   You will be put on our mailing list to receive our newsletter and a letter requesting a donation.  Thank you again for your consideration.

Temporary Closure of I-65 -- June 1 - August 1

65

Closure will save an additional year of construction delays

Team Kentucky is investing in a better Interstate 65 in Louisville by advancing critical infrastructure improvements along the corridor through a planned temporary closure that will allow contract crews to accelerate the replacement of three key bridges.

Five miles of I-65 are scheduled to close between the Watterson Expressway (I-264) and downtown Louisville (Jefferson Street) early on Monday, June 1. It’s expected to reopen to traffic on Saturday, Aug. 1. The closure is expected to begin by 12:01 a.m. Monday.

A two-mile section of southbound I-65 is expected to reopen to two lanes of traffic by Wednesday, July 1. It stretches from University Boulevard to the Watterson Expressway (I-264). Reopening this section of roadway will reopen four ramps: Crittenden Drive on and off ramps and the on-ramps from Eastern Parkway and University Boulevard to southbound I-65.

During the closure, the I-65 bridges over Kentucky Street/Brook Street, Hill Street/CSX Railroad/Burnett Avenue, and Bradley Avenue near the fairgrounds will be replaced. All three bridges were constructed in the late 1950’s as part of the original construction of the interstate.  The old structures will be removed, and new bridges will be built in their place. Sidewalks will be reconstructed and improved, and modernized lighting will be installed under and adjacent to the new bridges.

“While ongoing maintenance has kept the bridges open to carry traffic, the structures have served Kentuckians for decades and are at the end of their service life,” said Natalie House-Lewis, KYTC project manager. “Replacing them will provide a safer, more reliable connection for the approximate 125,000 drivers who rely on them daily. With a service life of 75 years, the new bridges will serve the next generation of travelers for decades to come.”

The full interstate closure will greatly accelerate replacing the three bridges. The two-month closure will save more than a year of additional interstate restrictions. In addition to greatly shortening the construction timeline, the temporary closure is the most efficient construction and fiscal approach.

With the closure, crews are able to address three bridges in need of immediate improvements as quickly as possible. The closure also gives contract crews the room they need to work safely and efficiently in the area.

Crews are doing as much work as possible in advance of closing the bridges, including relocating utilities, constructing the substructures, prefabricating bridge deck panels and steel girders, moving supplies on site, and staging equipment.

Getting Around During the Closure

During the closure, through traffic will be detoured to I-264 (Georgia Davis Powers Expressway) on the west side of Louisville. Detour routes were developed based on extensive traffic studies done over the past two years.  The signed detour route is the shortest distance, utilizes roadways with the most available capacity, and creates the least traffic impacts.

Traffic accessing downtown Louisville will use the Jefferson Street exit from southbound I-65. Traffic will also be able to access downtown Louisville via I-64.

Traffic leaving downtown will use the ramp from East Liberty Street to access northbound I-65.

Some ramps to and from I-264 (Watterson Expressway) are being temporarily widened to help accommodate additional traffic during the closure.  This includes the ramp to southbound I-65 from eastbound and westbound I-264, the ramp from northbound I-65 to eastbound I-264, and the eastbound I-264 ramp to the eastbound I-264 collector distributor near the airport.

What to Expect

A total of nine bridges on the I-65 corridor are being replaced or rehabilitated as part of the project. The first three bridges are those most in need of repair.

When the closure ends, I-65 will be open to two lanes of traffic in each direction. Restrictions will continue through the end of the project. Substantial completion is expected in late 2027.

The closure this summer will save a full year of additional restrictions on the interstate.

 Staying Informed

Project information and updates can be found at I65CentralCorridor.com. While on the site, users can sign up to have project and traffic updates delivered to their inboxes or by text to their phones.

Project updates will now be shared on KYTC District 5 (D5) Facebook and X pages. Anyone who followed project updates on the I-65 Central Corridor Facebook or X pages should follow or like the KYTC D5 pages.

Pothole

Four snow events this season, repeated freezing and thawing, and winter road treatments have taken a toll on Louisville Metro streets. These harsh conditions weaken pavement and lead to potholes.

In 2025 alone, Louisville Metro's Department of Transportation filled more than 48,860 potholes.

Reporting potholes helps crews respond more quickly, keeping roads safer and smoother for everyone throughout the winter months.
